SpikesPuppy
So my babies are 2 weeks old today wow they have grown so much!!! And we need to think about worming the little slugs. I have a bottle of the Drontal puppy suspension and the instructions say start at 2 weeks, and every two weeks until 8 weeks and then at 12 weeks etc. But I have noticed people here saying they start at 3 weeks old? My books/literature varies from 10days to 4-5 weeks and I am so confused LOL. Not particularly thrilled with the vet's puppy knowledge so not going to ask their advice Also, is 2 weeks too young to start them licking plain yoghurt/nutrigel from my fingers if they are willing? They go for the fingers 'plain' anyway :D Or anything else that may be suitable (suggestions welcome ) Everyone is fat and healthy and continuing to put on good amounts of weight each day Mr Green decided he would take his adventures further and almost climbed out of the box :D Going to have to do something about expanding their world soon!!! oakway
I think you will find by worming at 2 weeks you will be picking up on the worm cycle, thus helping eliminate them. If your bitch has been wormed regularly throught out the pregency your puppy worm burden will be far less or non exsistant. It is difficult to tell if the pups have any worms with the first worming as the mums can be so quick with cleans up of the pups.

She was wormed in late September and then again at 42 days (I think... the recommended time anyway) pregnant. I guess my main worry is is it going to be safe to worm them now? Using the correct dosage of course!!

SpikesPuppy
Thanks Sorry for the annoying questions! Soon as I figure out a plan, I come across something that contradicts it & I get confused and unsure I need to stop reading so much. (And yes, I do speak to my girl's breeder about it but there is such a range of knowledge on DOL and I like to look at things from a variety of angles). ellz
I had always started worming at 2 weeks. This time, I waited until 3 weeks and hit them with worm tablets. I'm going back to starting at 2 weeks with a liquid.

The liquid seems much easier & easier to get the correct dosage. I have wormed one litter and that was a BYB/Farm litter. I think we did them about 2 weeks-ish, but if it weren't for our insistance they wouldn't have been done at all.
ellz
I'd heard from various places that worming with the tablet was more effective than either of the two puppy liquid wormers so I decided to give it a try. I wasn't at all happy with the results. The Staffords were by far one of the wormiest litters I have ever seen, yet the protocol for their mother prior to their birth wasn't altered from what I have always done and she still remains worm free (confirmed by faecal smear). As the only difference was not using the Troy worm liquid, that's the only thing I can put it down to.
SpikesPuppy
Interesting. Thanks. I wasn't sure which brand to go with, ended up sending mum to the shop and she picked up the Drontal because of the brand I guess Cost nearly twice as much though
Sandra777
Only ever used liquid once - the Drontal(?) chocolate suspension stuff when it first came out and ended up painted in the stuff Always used pills with no problems, a pill cutter isn't expensive or a good sharp narrow bladed knife and a level surface works well too...... I've always started at 2 weeks and not had any issues.

Ozstar
I worm mine at 3 weeks then again at 5 weeks with a tablet. I used to use the liquid and found that it didn't work. At 9 weeks and then every month after I use advocate. Leanne
SpikesPuppy
Okay now I'm scared Will stick with the liquid as it cost enough!! Waiting for mum to get home from work- not game to do it on my own
sandgrubber
I know the drug companies want me to worm as often as they can get me to do so. I know I have never seen ANY worms in pups on this property. So I play around with different strategies. Have developed a hatred of the liquid stuff . . . which the puppies think they like and then seem to hate. It upsets me to see them shaking their little heads madly to try and get the stuff out of their mouths. This litter I did tablets at 3 weeks. Saw no worms. But I never find worms. I think I'll go all tablets in the future, probably 3,5,8 weeks . . .and go to some other routine if I see worms.
Ozstar
Years ago there was a lot of talk about the liquid killing pups. Majority of breeders that I have spoken to have said that when using the liquid at 2 - 4 weeks found that when they wormed at 8 weeks the pups had heaps of worms. I have used tablets for about 6 years now and have never seen any worms, my pups have never looked wormy either. Have developed a hatred of the liquid stuff . . . which the puppies think they like and then seem to hate. It upsets me to see them shaking their little heads madly to try and get the stuff out of their mouths. They normally end up spitting the stuff out or vomiting it back up. With a tablet it is easy as it is very small and I mix it in with a small bit of mince. The pups never know they have had a tablet. Leanne
SpikesPuppy
How do you give the tablets to the pups?
Ozstar
How do you give the tablets to the pups? I buy drontol all wormer 10kg tablet and cut it into quarters, this makes the tablet very small. I then place it inside some mince (my pups are eating mince out of my hand at 3 weeks) and give it to the pup. If you are having problems you can try squashing the tablet to a powder and mixing it in the mince. At 5 weeks the pups get half a tablet each which I either mix in again with mince or just push it down the pups throat. I would wait till the pups are 3 weeks old before worming with a tablet. Bilbo Baggins
I had this very discussion with my vet tonight when I took Ruby in for her post whelping checkup. He states that it is not necessary to worm puppies. The wormer only works once the worms have formed and its round worms anyway. This said its for a well cared for mother. Different scenario for a feral dog. I have never wormed my pups in 20 years and have never seen a worm. Always tablet at the 7 week mark with immunisation. Sandra777
How do you give the tablets to the pups? I just open their mouths and pop the bit of the pill down their throat. Don't think I'd like to do this with a small breed puppy though, I usually have to push one or two down with a finger.
becks
I've always used the Panacur liquid at 3,5 and 8 weeks. Did hear of a few litters getting diarhoea with the drontal so that put me off trying it. Never had a problem getting the pups to take it, once you have the right technique!
