Sayreovi
The thought of three unleashed staffies climbing into another dog is too horrifying. How would you even begin to stop a scrap like that? It's a nightmare scenario for an owner of harmless, defenceless, friendly, cowardly sooks, such as my guys. I agree, 3 Staffords running up to my dogs would have ended up with an all out brawl. My dogs don't like staffies and the dog being entire and off lead running up to them wouldn't have been good. I am not ashamed to admit it but I would pick up the closest stick or something and start fending them off using force. Hopefully combined with me coming after them, they would run. Then again it's the reason I don't take them to dog parks and avoid other dogs like the plague when walking them. I love dogs, but I love MY dogs more. KAT1
That is horrible. I also had a bad experience with my goldie boy about a month ago. A 2 yr old full male and 9 month old puppy attacked him. As soon as I saw the 2 yr old I got a bad feeling since its tail was straight up in the air and it was growling, so I decided it was time to go. As we moved away this dog started running after us,and started attacking my boy, the 9 mnth staffy puppy just followed (although I think he thought it was a good game), one on either side of my boy (who thought it was a game too but didn't quite know what to make of it). It was the worst thing I have ever seen. I was yelling at the dogs and pushing them away, not thinking about what would happen if they grabbed a hold of me (I thought of that after the incident). The owner just did nothing!!!! Eventually after much yelling (from me) he called them to him, and after ages they finally left. So I put my boy on a lead and waited till I thought they had gone far enough away before heading home (since they went in the same direction I had to go), but then the dogs came back a second time. I couldnt believe it. Eventually the guy put them on a lead, but then he must have let the lead go of the 2 yr old, and it attacked AGAIN!!!! By that time I was growling at the dog like one very angry mean dog (even I scared myself) and eventually the guy grabbed him and said "he doesn't usually behave like this". It was so horrible, just thinking about it makes me sick to the stomach. Thankfully he wasn't hurt, and doesn't seem to a have been psychologically scarred (although I have been). I think he thought it was a game. Needless to say I have not been back to the park, which is a shame since my boy loves socialising with other dogs, but I don't want to risk him. It also made me think of carrying a retractable walking stick when I walk him, in case something like that happened again. I also called the council, and they said that if they don't know where the person lives they are unable to send a ranger to give them a warning. But they did say that they would send a ranger to the park to patrol it around the same time in the days following and if they saw the guy they would speak to him. Sorry for such a long reply, but i still haven't gotten over the incident fully.
mutt lover
having had a dog killed in a dog attack I know what its like, My suggestion would be to carry something even a bit of short poly pipe in case you need to whack a dog with it I carry a broom handle I cut down I feel it has saved me a couple of times have been abused by owners for hitting their dogs and my reply was 'Well perhaps hitting you may be better as it may knock some sense into you'. Had a bloke tell he once that if my dog didn't run his dog wouldn't of chased her there are moron's in this world who should own goldfish instead of dog's! poochmad
I have lost count the amount of times people have told me that dogs "will sort them self out" if they were all of lead. As Tilly said, its quite common. People are stupid Hope Sonny is ok and I'd report it. You never know, others may have the same problem with her one day. This is what a lot of people say when my dogs are being harassed - so it's not true? Are we supposed to step in?
Guest Willow
My impression is that dogs on lead get more worried when a dog runs up to them because they can't get away or manouvre properly so they show distress. Perhaps this creates tension in the other dog and it bounces back etc. Yes, when confronted, a dog has two options...fight or flight. If they are on lead you take away the option of flight. URGH I had the same issue once when a mans two offlead dogs tried having a go at Tyson whilst he was on lead with me as I was went in to get some poo bags. The man acted like it was my fault saying 'it's cause your dog's on a leash, take your leash off your dog, you're supposed to take their lead off straight away in an offleash area' blah blah blah... D**khead I just got out of there, didn't even get a chance to get any bags. That's crazy....you are allowed to have your dogs off lead in a designated area, but you don't have to. Off lead dogs must still be under control. I think some people say that because they have no control. The thought of three unleashed staffies climbing into another dog is too horrifying. How would you even begin to stop a scrap like that? It's a nightmare scenario for an owner of harmless, defenceless, friendly, cowardly sooks, such as my guys. This happened to us last year in avery remote area. The owner looked as shocked as I was to see anyone else there. Fortunately he knew enough about dogs to sort it out within seconds, and between us, the whole thing ws fixed before it got out of hand.
