My Poor Dog Was Attacked Today

I use to get the "you should let them off lead as it is better for them", when I had a dog aggresive dog. I thought it wasn't fair to my other dogs to keep them away from leash free parks just beacause my boy was dog agressive, so I did what I believed to be the responsible thing by keeping him on lead and staying far away from other people in the park (our leash free park is something like 15acres so it is possible to stay very far from other dogs).

It was amazing how many people use to tell me (after their dog had rushed up to us and been all in his face) just to let him off as he would be much more relaxed and the situation would be fine. Yes in some situations this may be true but not in the case of this dog, I knew this dog inside out and NO he would NOT have been better being let off.

Hope your dog doesnt have any side effects from this instance.

URGH I had the same issue once when a mans two offlead dogs tried having a go at Tyson whilst he was on lead with me as I was went in to get some poo bags. The man acted like it was my fault saying 'it's cause your dog's on a leash, take your leash off your dog, you're supposed to take their lead off straight away in an offleash area' blah blah blah... D**khead I just got out of there, didn't even get a chance to get any bags.

This is exactly what happens with me! My little boy gets fear aggressive with big in your face dogs (after being attacked 2 years ago) so whenever there are any big bouncy dogs in the park I put him on lead and 90% of the time the big dog will come bolting over and straight to him, ignoring my 2 offlead dogs completely instead of just playing with them. Then I will usually try to walk off with pepe so that the big dog doesn't get in his face but the big dog keeps following right up pepe's but and people always say to me"don't worry he's just playing he's not aggressive".

Nowadays I just tell them "well my dog is and having your dog offleash without it being under voice control is against the law, if my dog has a go at yours it's your fault for letting it approach an on leash dog without the owners permission" (a ranger told me to say that as that's how its stated on the offleash park sign)

It usually seems to work although the other dog's owner generally has to come grab their dog's collar and drag it off because it doesn't have any form of recall whatsoever

Yes, because it would be WnH's fault for having her dogs under control and on leash

I have found in some cases if a group of dogs are off lead they get along better- for eg; I used to take my DA dobe to the off leash park (Before I knew better), for a long time if a dog approached her while she was leashed she would react BUT in the 3 or so yers we went to that park daily and she was off-leash, she was only involved in 2 fights- one when we were walking with a friend's brother and he became frightened of 2 bullmastiffs that came very close to him, the dogs leapt on him and my girl (appeared to) defend him. Another time there was an unruly Rotti in the park that was known to attack anything that moved .

I believe that the reason she got so upset/aggressive when on leash was because *I* was nervous and she could feel that through the lead... if there was no lead, there was no tension.

Poor you.Some people have no idea their dog is imposing or being a menace.

I've had my girl rotty X on lead humped by a female rotty while the owners laughed.They thought their dogs unacceptable and dominant behaviour was funny???!!!!

Explained my girl won't find it funny and it's going to get nasty if they do not grab their dog.

I didn't appreciate their dog humping mine whilst out walking on leash minding our own biz. Their dog was running loose annoying lots of dogs.Later in the day this dog had a fight with a smaller dog when it tried to hump.

They have a disaster on their hands.Won't take much to get them and the dog in real trouble.Very dominant dog and no social skills.

They still didn't get it and said that she was just playing-like it was OK.

My girl is very friendly but she isn't gonna let any dog hump her and just stand there-especially a young pushy female dog.

I feel for you and I really hope that you and Sonny are OK & no long term affects.

I have also been told that "that's what happens when you have them on lead".

I was trying hard to socialise my dog - from outside the fence, she could only sniff the other dogs at that stage - she was very shy and timid and I was getting her used to other dogs (other than the one she lives with). One of the dogs inside the fence snarled and growled and the people inside said that it was my fault as I was outside with her on lead.

I didnt question it (as they sounded like they knew what they were talking about) and I never took her back to another dog park because of it. Until now I thought it WAS my fault!

Just people making up rationale's for their dogs behaviour. Head back to the park and do what you were doing.

Glad to hear you reported it.

Riley got attacked once when I was walking him by a dog roaming off lead.

From advise I got from here I bathed his whole neck (Where the dog went for) with salt water. He has alot of hair round his neck so I was sure the dog only got mouthfuls of fur, but did it just incase there was a small wound etc even though I coudln't see anything.

Then we had several meetings with family's dogs etc that were friendly too.

Edited to add - I reported the dog that attacked Riley - only knew the breed and the area it happened. The owners got tracked down, but turned out they were involved in a drug bust, so no idea what happened to the dog after that.

I was at a Park once when another dog was continually hassling my GSD who was on lead beside me. They were aggressive confrontations. After numerous 'hit and runs' by this dog I told the owner to either control her dog or I would let my fellow off his lead so that he could sort it out HIS own way. She then put her dog on it's lead!

Perhaps what your stupid woman was trying to say was that maybe her three dogs would not have been so 'brave' had your dog been off lead??? Perhaps he was viewed on by them as an easy target?? Some people are fools.

I was at a dog park last week with a friend, dogs on lead, as soon as we entered my friends dog had a dog come at him, we stood our ground and made them leave - people have to be held responsible.

My new neighbours on the other hand will get 3 chances to get their shit together before I call the council.

Well done reporting it. if the council don't know they can't do anything about it next timet he dog/s attacked may not be so lucky. When I was about 15 (years ago) my airdale was on a lead being walked home and was attcked, the dog went straight for his neck the only thing that saved Charlie was the wide studded collar he wore, the attacker then grabbed a front leg and wouldn't let go. Luckily for me some people driving past helped get the ataacking dog off adn I got home. Charlie needed stitches to his leg, and minor bites to his neck, I still get worried when a dog approaches my dog and an owner isn't around.

If it is an attack it should be reported, especially when owners don't care and won't take any responsibility.

I was walking three of my dogs one day - down our street . All my dogs were on leads.. I was about 5 houses from home when a cross bred cattle dog came out of a house - the owner was on the front lawn and he started to circle. The dog was exhibiting very aggressive behavour - hackles were up, tail flagging, etc...

I kept my dogs behind me and kept moving so that the dog couldnt get to my crew. I called out to the owner and asked him to come and get his dog before it attacked. He told me it wasn't going attack (by this time the dog was rumbling..) and that "its all your fault becuase if you didnt have your dogs on leads there wouldn't be a problem"...

So there are two idiots in this world

I posted this a while back, I had my girl GSD onlead and we were charged by 3 whippets, I yelled to the owner, sitting quite calmy on a seat, to call her dogs, and she replied 'ITS OFFLEASH" by this time one had bitten ava's rear (they were working as a pack) and she was going apes***t . stupid stupid woman!
