Boronia Posted February 2, 2010 Share Posted February 2, 2010 I have been reading about the furminator and wondered if it would be suitable for the Westies. They don't shed much, but when I brush and comb them there is usually the fluffy under-hair in the brush. I have tried a rake and they like that, (their hair is pretty thick on their shoulders and haunches) the rake seems to get that fluffy-shed-hair out OK but I thought maybe I should get a Furminator as well (there is a medium one on Oztion for $18.95...free postage, 10 available). Your advice would be appreciated, thank you I got one 2 weeks go for my gsd,s and I got to say its amazing the amount of top coat and under coat it got out. They look much better, and the house has less hair, but I am not sure about using one on Westies. I thought it was only for dogs with a lot of undercoat? slk Posted February 2, 2010 Share Posted February 2, 2010 I use one for both the pug and the cat - I LOVE it. Pug - indifferent - cat - HATES IT! But they always look and feel so much better afterwards, and my house has far less fur so it's a winner for me. Not sure if it would work on non/minimal shedding dogs though. I have one for Zero but i find that I can get as much hair out of the coat with a comb and line brushing as I can with the furminator. It's second to nothing on my friend's labrador though - if I didn't have one I don't use that often, my friend definitely would have bought one by now! ETA: It's definitely not for all dogs. I found that the coat king made Zero's coat look very choppy since it cuts the hair rather than just removing the dead coat but I know people who swear by theirs. If i had a short haired dog (Zero has a long coat for a sibe) like a labrador or a pug, I would definitely use the furminator more. It gets out all the dead fluffy undercoat and some of the fly-away top coat I'm not familiar with the Westie coat though. It's not suitable for every breed, I think it works best on double coated short haired breeds like the Lab? Got mine (a medium) from ebay from the US for about $25 including postage. I gave one away on here a few weeks ago as I hated it for the Aussies. I much prefer an Oster rake, which gets right into the undercoat and strips out the loose stuff. The Furminator seemed to just skim the topcoat and not remove much. The DOLer I gave it to has smooth collies, but I haven't heard how she's liking it. My Oster rake cost me around $30, my friend in Sydney got it for me from Classic Dog Supplies. They retail for about $80-100, so there's a huge markup on dog grooming equipment. I tend to think an Oster rake or a Mars Coat King would be more suited to the loger coat of a goldie. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Crazy Daisy Posted February 2, 2010 Share Posted February 2, 2010 I don't think it would work well on a terrier type coat. I think you might find it will break off the feathering of a westie. It mainly works on undercoats. great for my shepherd X and I used it heaps as a groomer on cats, labs, shibas, corgis and similar coated breeds. Just my personal results with cockers...... but the furminator merly skimmed the surface, where as the coat king takes out all the dead coat & is designed to only remove that .I can obtain coat kings cheaply, ;) if u r interested fel free to pm me .
