My crystal ball tells me that once all or at least most Councils fall into step with what the RSPCA wants regarding the "2-dog" law, the next step will be that it will become a "law" rather than merely Council by-law.

And then after that, it will be a choice of one of 5 'family friendly' breeds before we hit rock bottom and no dogs at all unless they are battery operated

My crystal ball says pedigree dog owners are so busy bickering among themselves that they won't do anything to stop such processes . . . though an organised group could easily make the case for 'hobby breeding' permits clear. I would like to see the breeder permit and the 'hobby breeder' license combined . . . let the present generally high fees paid to register an entire dog or bitch be used to cover the registration fees for keeping a dog entire and perhaps require some sort of veterinary inspection to go along with it. Require desexing of all animals not registered as entire. Use the framework to make it possible for people with eight to twelve dogs to get 'hobby breeder' licenses -- which protect their right to keep multiple dogs in land with appropriate zoning.

To be honest I am against any set law or permit system being put in place to be enforced Australia wide.

I think it should be up to each council to choose what they will or will not permit in their own council area.

What may suit a metro council would be ridiculous in many rural councils & small country townships.

A person can choose an area to live in that suits their needs & lifestyle & check with the council beforehand.

The by laws in my council suited my needs & lifestyle. I was allowed a number of dogs that was specified in the information I received when I purchased my property, no licenses, permits or anything else.

The only requirement being that each dog is registered individually, which they are.

The only concern is that if the by law goes through I have to ask if I may keep the extra dogs.

I do not want my council to comply with uniform rules, laws, permit systems or anything else.

It works fine the way it is, making its own. Which I so much hope they won't change.

Of course these new 'laws' will only apply to those who actually register their dogs with the council!

And how many people have had their properties visited by very busy rangers to check how many dogs they have and whether they are all registered?? (This is just a theoretical question, not actually looking for an answer here guys!) Im sure that, as is the case in our shire, the rangers task of chasing up dog related issues is just one very small part of his job.

After reading our local shires dog laws which were rewritten in 2000, and by the look of it reviewed 2008, the majority of dog owners in our local area are breaking the 'dog laws' in the way they 'keep' their dogs anyway! I could count on one hand the dogs that are confined as specified in said 'dog laws'..............As usual it comes down to people doing the right thing in the first place.

Our laws state that in 'town' a limit of two dogs over the age of 3 months and their offspring and 'out of town' 4 dogs over the age of 3 months and their offspring.

I was thinking about this thread last night as I was trying to get to sleep whilst our neighbours 20 gazillion bantam roosters crowed the night away  ...And we live on 5 acre properties out here! Sure glad theyre two blocks away :o ;) Also glad they were only chooks and not his dogs barking! The confusing thing for me is that we live on five acres in what is classed on our rates as 'General Farming Pastoral' in '******* Town' :( Does this mean I can have three dogs?????
