My idiot dog is sitting out in the sun its 24 degrees and she is due to whelp any time soon.

She could be inside in the cool.

Maybe we coddle them a bit too much.

Bloody Victorians. 24 degrees isn't HOT. Now if she was out on a 34 degree day, I might think she was a little feeble-minded!

OMG where do you live??! That's fricken HOT!

Victoria, Yarra Valley, it was during the same heat wave that brought us the Black Saturday bushfires, taken a few days before them I think.

But Whippets DO feel the cold. 50+ for a Whippet is probably like 30 for a normal dog, right :banghead:

I can't see the picture due my work blocker but it must be something in the water in the valley.

I still shake my head at my Sibe that day. She spent most of it lying on her back on the lawn in the full sun on that day :swear: , while I spent the afternoon packing everything up, getting the horses organised just in case, filling up the gutters and downpipes with water and spraying the embers that we had landing everywhere. Every so often I would spray her with the hose and she would look at my with a why did you go and disturb me look on her face  Crazy dog :swear:

Yep, Caber was the same that day!! Out on his side on the concrete in full sun  it got up past 48degrees here and I had to coerce him inside with treats!! Nessa runs circles around the yard in any weather so if it's really hot we often take her out on lead otherwise she will end up collapsing or something.

There may be some physics behind the various answers. Allen's Rule in ecology says that warm blooded animals tend to be lanky (read greyhound) in hot climates and rounder with smaller limbs (read Staffy) in cold climates . . . the idea is you want to minimize surface to volume ratio to deal with cold . . . and maximize it to deal with heat. Add the fact that dogs function as evapourative coolers using the surface area of their lungs as the evapouration chamber . . . and voila, the greyhound / whippet -- with enormous lung capacity -- lies in the sun will the staffy seeks the air con.

Or so theory says. It's always fun to predict things after the fact :)
