Maybe it's not as bad as my experience but I don't like the sound of it. My IG was given ratsac by a malicious neighbour a few years ago and he spent a weekend in an emergency vet on a drip and had to then go to the specialist centre for 2 weeks, it was touch and go as to whether he'd survive. Then he came home and was on Vit K for 2 months at intervals of every few hours - my neighbours had to help me. Before he got to that point, I had been perplexed as to what was wrong with him - he'd vomited too and was quiet in the evening before. Then Saturday morning, he vomited brown stuff smelling of poo, straight to a vet (not my normal one but one close to home) and was diagnosed with a fever and given an injection of antibiotic. Got home, vet had closed, when he started vomiting large pools of blood. Drove to the emergency vet with him vomiting blood all over the windows, it was horrific to say the least. They discharged him and by then he had pneumonia so he was on a drip and I was told to go to the North Ryde Vet Specialist Centre in order to save his life. He was never the same healthwise after this experience but did live another 8 years. That is the thing with living in Sydney, we do have access to 24 hour care - don't ask me about the size of the vet bills though, but I'd do it again. I really hope that this boy makes it through. indigirl Posted January 30, 2010 Author Share Posted January 30, 2010 Bindii- some clinics aren't staffed on w/ends etc .. so dogs are left alone , and checked on every so often I think I would do the same as indigirl And yes, I could manage a drip line/bottle. Yup plus my friend is the vet nurse so I would call her or the vet if I had any questions/concerns. I live in Broken Hill. I am not a nurse but i work in a hospital and am familiar with IVs etc. Its not rocket science its a drip line. I understand not everyone would be comfortable doing this, but I would be. Vomiting isn't necessarily a sign of Ratsack so please don't feel bad about not taking him yesterday. I would be very careful about washing him as any sort of rubbing, no matter how soft could induce more bleeding under the skin and into underlying tissues. Treat him like fine China, no excess touching patting or moving around. Lots of small drinks, even a bit of Chicken stock (low salt of course) added to some water to help keep him hydrated would help. I know that seeing the blood on him may freak your friend out, but The touching associated with washing drying could meake the problem worse. While hes still bleeding it has slowed down heaps, so seems the vit k is working. Reg is a big boy, and im sure this has helped him, an IG is so small they would be easily overcome by the ratsac i imagine. Reg also has a fever. Basically im to watch him. If bleeding gets worse then straight back to vet. Any concerns, call the vet. He is more settled here with me than in a strange environment. Aircon is on high and hes laying on the lounge quietly. Tomorrow he goes back to the vet for more medication. Basically its a wait and see thing now, to see if the bleeding stops. Unfortunately living out here means I dont have access to specialist vet care. The owner should be home in 2 hrs. She is a registered nurse so has a lot more knowledge than me re:meds. Will leave him all crusty. Wish the bleeding would stop .. sigh.. if he gets up and moves around at all the bleeding gets noticeably worse. What an awful thing to happen to the poor old boy and of course what a nightmare for you, as how stressful must that have been for you happening at your place and thinking it may have been caused by the bone he got when all along he ingested poison at his own home I am pretty shocked that his owner laid this poison where it was accessible to her dog, even if the tradesman did move the furniture. The doses are fairly low though and even rats and mice have to eat several doses of it before they are sick enough to die.Is he with you or at the vet? Hes at home with me, I wont leave my dogs at the vet. If he needed to be on a drip I would just have brought him home on a drip. One of the advantages of living in the sticks i guess! I havent left his side as hes more settled when im with him poor old fella. Hes lying on the lougeroom floor bleeding happily away lol How it he going....have they given him anything for the bleeding, such as platelets or at least Vit K.....Ratsack (warfarin) is nasty stuff. Two were vit k not sure about the others. I was pretty stressed at the time, so didnt take in the finer details. I was desperatly trying to contact the owner. Thats what it does to rats as well - dissolves their insides. :D Not to mention the risks for dogs and cats. I hope the gorgeous big boy is on the improve now.
