Sparty Posted January 29, 2010 Share Posted January 29, 2010 Hi all!! looking for pics and stories about Koolies to temp/nag/bludgeon hubby with for ideas on our next dog!!! hubby wants a kelpie but he of course fell in love with Denise's avenpart kelpies which well i think might be too much dog for me i have border collies at the moment and do different things with them obedience tracking flyball herding stuff i think Koolies might also do well in? Ons Posted January 29, 2010 Share Posted January 29, 2010 my heart dogs, I will never be with out one in my life. Even people like my Dad who say they don't like dogs comment about how beautiful and obedient my Flashy is. As soon as I have my acerage I'm going to get myself a chocolate coolie as well I can't compare them with a kelpie, I don't know enough about kelpies. But I have met lots of coolies. Some can be quite shy but I think it's how you socialise them. As for brightness and obedience, Flashy is wonderful. He sticks to my side like glue, always has to know where I am. If I go out the front he can come too because i know one command and he will be back at my side, the retreivers would be running up the road. But before he goes out the front door with me he always hesitates and makes sure that's what I'm told him he is allowed to do. He knows his mummy can be a bit "dipsy" at times and just checks. He seems to just comprehend things without me explaining them to him and one stern "Flash" makes him stop. Just wants to please as much as possible. I haven't done any formal training with him but would love too, just not really facilities here. He can be alot brighter than me at times, if I give him another dog's bowl he won't eat out of it and I wonder why then realise it's not his red bowl. I have to give him permission then to eat the food because normally one of the retrievers has by that stage demolished the contents of the red bowl. He has adapted well to living at my place. I understand that this is a general trait of a coolie that they adapt well to their circumstances. One thing I do find is that he has to always know what is going on with everything, including myself, the other 2 dogs and the 3 cats and most of all he has to make sure that the 3 cats and the male dog are behaving themselves. He seems to let Tilly get away with whatever she wants, they are the bestest of mates interestingly he finds the present foster dog great fun to run around the yard with but won't let Tilly play with him and herds him away He loves lying on myself or one of the other dogs but he is very protective of me and my other animals. Everynight he has to snuggle as close to me as possible for his bedtime cuddle then happily moves away to sleep unless it's cold. Loves kids although not had a great deal to do with them he adores it when they come visiting. He also likes most people, I think he was a victim of cruelty before I adopted him so he is cautious about some people and petrified of brooms. He adores my friend who owns lots of coolies, if we are ever at her place he will be sitting beside me and as soon as I leave the room he goes racing over and jumps on her lap, it is very funny and just shows how he wants to be loyal to me. Kavik Posted January 29, 2010 Share Posted January 29, 2010 Kaos can be a bit strong willed - I remember getting him home and going a few times when he was a puppy and he has given me the finger a couple of times at agility comps (refusing to sit for his sts). But he is SO much fun to train! Very keen, loves to work, good drive for food and toys (he loves his squeaky toy that I throw for him. I can't get him to tug out of the yard, but I think more my problem/my technique than his). And a much more solid temperament than Zoe who I got from the pound.
