Sleepy Puppy...

Allo!

This could quite possibly be me being an overprotective mother and I know puppies need a lot of rest but.....

Meet Chester.

post-32467-1264677804_thumb.jpg

He's been home with us for 4 days now and the first day he was practically bouncing off the walls with energy, wanting to interact with everything. Now, we'll play with him for maybe 20 mins and then he's out like a light for maybe an hour and a half or more, sometimes up to almost 3 hours. And when i'm doing things around the house, he'll follow but as soon as I stop he'll just flop down and rest

I'm thinking it could be that he's getting into the routine of having a play and then a sleep but is it normal for him wanting to sleep THIS much?

Am going to see how much he eats tonight for his dinner, just to check incase it MIGHT be some sort of virus

Any thoughts?

To me it sounds ok- puppies DO need to sleep a lot- like any baby animal. He has had a big shock, moving to your house, and exploring etc... so now he needs to rest and recuperate and grow.

Perhaps he would benefit from a routine- where he is put into his pen/crate/room for naps? then he won't be tempted to try and keep up with the humans

Hey there, I'm a new puppy owner as well, ChestNUT ( ) is 12 weeks old. We got him at 8 weeks old and after a day or two he gained energy and confidence. However, the older he got the more I noticed that he slept more. How old is Chester? Chestnut from about 11 weeks on could sleep for several hours, especially when he was able to initiate his own routine (ie when we relaxed the crating schedule). 20 mins is a pretty long play session, maybe he's just tuckered out from it =) I would just watch his intake and output and see how his behaviour changes over the next few days. I was amazed at how different Chestnut's energy levels were over the first few weeks. I got quite concerned myself one day, I thought he was depressed! He was just so sleepy and not interested. I could jazz him up though, but he just took a little longer to wake up. The next day he was a fire cracker. So I think it's normal for little pups to have different days. See how he goes

When babies of any species are sleeping, they're growing.

Here are two of my babies sleeping peacefully....the bigger one is a yearling, the other a couple of months old and they are being watched by their "uncle".

They'll often sleep more in warmer weather too. Just make sure there is a constant supply of fresh water available for when he's awake.

I heard that cats slept a lot. Than I met Cavaliers! My boy and girl probably sleep for 16 hours a day!!!! As a pup (can't speak of Isla as we got her at 14 months) Shiraz did sleep a lot. We found on the hot Melbourne days he slept even more. I'll bet today (Melbourne is going to be 32) they spend pretty much up 'til around 6pm sleeping. Your little guy is gorgeous...fabulous choice in breeds!

My Cavalier is 13 months old and sleeps 90% of the day....he can have 8-9 hours at night, be awake less than an hour and then be napping again. Normally 1 eye opens and follows me out the room and then he either decides to follow or snoozes again. I just finished watching tv and he was between my and my husband with a blanket over us and he decided he'd rather stay on the couch than follow us!

:banghead: Reading your post I had some funny memories of taking Cory outside for toilet breaks, particularly the first and last of the day, and I'd very assertively order "Go toilet" ... he'd flop over on the grass, legs had buckled under him, and would lie down as if exhausted, and not budge until he was good and ready, rain or shine :banghead:

Perfectly normal for your pup IMO!
