yellowgirl
Hi all, Pepper is the latest addition to our little Chinese Crested clan. She's 9 years old, very shy and quite fat. Every single time she has a drink she coughs a lot afterwards as if the water has gone down the wrong pipe. Sarge, my 10 year old male Crestie does the same thing quite often, but Pepper does it every single time. Madeline, the 4 year old doesn't have any problem. Any thoughts or suggestions? She doesn't cough at any other time. Would it make any difference if I raised the water bowl? Is a vet visit needed?
hilaryo
One of my beagles has done this since she was a puppy. Every time she has a drink she seems to choke on it and sometimes even brings up a little water. As you say it is like the fluid goes down the wrong way. She is now 6 and is fine - I have never worried about it.

yellowgirl
Thanks hilaryo and daccydog. I feel bad for her because she never really gets to enjoy having a drink of water. I raised the water bowl last night but it didn't make any difference. I guess I'll just have to get used to her spluttering after every drink. ellz
Does it only happen if the water is cold? Have you tried her with tepid water? Some dogs don't react well to the sudden shock of cold water.
yellowgirl
No, it happens with all water. She still coughs if she drinks from the outside bowl on a hot day.
Bullbreedlover
Does she gulp the water when drinking? If they gulp while drinking the intake of air will make their palate open to the windpipe at the same time causing water to go down Raising the water bowl may make a difference as her head will be elevated more. mish13
Maybe a silly question, but is she debarked? Edited January 29, 2010 by mish13
Furkidsforever
From my experience I think you should be aware that coughing after drinking water can mean a tracea problem. Whilst it is not necessarily serious at the moment, you should know that this could be something that may get worse one day. If you think it is upsetting your dog you might like to have it checked out by your vet. And I am making this comment from experience with a couple of my yorkies over the years. yellowgirl
No, she doesn't seem to be gulping, I raised the bowl last night but it didn't make any difference. No she's not debarked. I think I will have the vet check her out to be safe.
