Nic oh lah
Hi there! My dear GSD this week has eaten 1 x Kramar Webbing Lead (Pink), in addition to 2 x queen size doona's, 3 paintbrushes, 1 x neighbourschilds small scooby-doo basketball and ATTEMPTED to eat 1 x Cordless Phone Handset. I swear - i do feed this dog, and every morning after her chicken necks are safely inside her she gets a large Kong filled with peanut butter and liver treats, and some fresh toys from her toy cupboard. She just loves to destroy things. But I love her. So we're turning to the bitter-taste spray as of today Due to her chewing through a lead when i attempted to keep her tethered (without exaggeration i can tell you it was less than 20seconds - left her, walked around the house opened the back door to go inside and she beat me through the door!) we used a freinds Benching Chain at obediance the other night, and once she realised there was no chewing it she settled down and sat happily watching the proceedings. Thank you lord for the Benching Chain. Now my problem is trying to find one! Has anyone seen these stocked online or anything? Do they have a different name in Aus. or something? I must have this chain! hehe. Edited January 28, 2010 by NicGSDlover
indigirl
I made a benching chain. Got a $4 lead from the reject shop made of chain. Cut off the fake leather handle and replaced it with a metal clasp from the hardware store for $2.
pipsqueak
not sure if these are what you're looking for, but have a look at the last couple of pages of the Kra-mar catalogue - though I have a feeling they might be too long for your needs. http://www.kramar.com.au/pdf/dogs_tethering.pdf

Also they seem very severe to me as i picture her getting her legs tangled up and she could get really hurt. And yeah - 4.5m is crazy long. The chain my freind had was about 1m long, and the same kind of chain as a choker chain with 2 O-rings at even distances down it and D-rings clips at both ends - perfect. Yeah - i think making one is my best option. Otherwise i'm paying the big $$$ to get one from the UK. It's brilliant for tethering.

Nic oh lah
http://www.aussierural.com.au/default.asp?...Category=XQJWWG Not quite - hehe- i'm fussy aren't i! This is what i'm after - this is from dogstuff.co.uk - I might bite the bullet and get one, otherwise i'll get some chain or chokers and rings and clips and make one. I'd not seen anything like it till the other night and it's really great - i would just use a lead but she can eat it which means i cant turn my back! pipsqueak
no, not fussy - I was just trying to save you having to buy overseas. Have a look at page 5 of the link I gave before - their second lot of tie-out chains only have one clip, but they do have a ring that you can thread the "prong" thingy through... so you can loop it around a post or something to secure that end, then clip the other to the dog. PAX
Think about what you need and go to the Hardware store.
persephone
Not sure what fittings you require..My guess is there is a ring/hook to attach leads/chains to? In that case it's dead easy ! get the sort of chain you like from a hardware store.....get two SWIVELLED snaphooks...attach one to each end of the chain length, using two nice stainless steel link fasteners(look like a chain link, but can be screwed shut) the size that will fit thru your chain links... DONE, and will probably cost around $20. You end up with a snaphook for the collar- a length of chain, strong as you want, and a snaphook for the anchor point. NB: stainless or brass snaphooks are more expensive, but STRONGER-and usually better made.
becks
You probably will find it difficult to buy them in Aus, as they don't seem to have the benched champ shows like we do in the UK (except for the Royal shows??), so if you want a benching chain and your friend can't remember where they got theirs from, then you might be better off to get one from the UK. All links are welded, so dogs can't get free from the chain breaking and the large O rings allow you to wrap the chain around an anchor point. Nic oh lah
Oh she knows where she got it from - her mum used it when she started with dogs like 25yrs ago i think she said. And that was overseas to the best of my knowledge. So yeah - they seem to be prevalent in the UK and i found it a great solution and a safer one than metre's long chains and those awful wirey type tieout chains that could easily tangle around a limb. I will get to the making and be sure to exhibit it proudly! To bunnings for me!
Nic oh lah
Woohoo! $35 and a trip to Bunnings and to Pet Wise and I have myself a benching chain! Rather than the rough edged chain from the Hardware Store i bought a 75cm Check Chain. Oh - my model is Roxy the 3yr old tortie, and unofficially Sophie's boss. Nekhbet
just be careful check chains are not made to take direct strain along their length and can snap
Nic oh lah
Yep - it's a "Saint Bernard" size one - lol. Sophie doesn't pull or strain against it, it's just that she chews for the fun of it. Once tethered with something she can't chew on she'll lay there quite content to watch her surroundings.
