Ok, This Is Weird!

I've just come back from the vet having Sugar's pups vaccinated....

Upon close examination, it has been found that one puppy has no ear hole

It looks quite normal inside, but it appears to have no hole! He moves his ear to sound, but this could be due to vibrations.

The vet said he's only ever seen such a thing once! I can have scans done by a specialist to see if he has an ear canal, but I've been advised cost is around or in excess of $1000.

Has anyone EVER heard of this.

Will try to get some photos when my man gets home tonight.

:) the poor baby. I too poke and prod my babies from day dot until they leave, but ear holes are something i dont think you'd expect could be missing! Did the vet discover it when he put one of those ear microscope thingys in or can you see it just by looking inside it when you're cleaning it? Are both missing or just one?

No, I haven't heard of it and dont feel bad because you hadn't found it before now. I checked all the puppies in both litters over carefully and had them examined by a vet as well. I cannot recall looking for ear canals though. I hope it wont affect the little one long term. Hopefully it has good hearing in the other ear, he has got one good ear hasn't he. :)

err - you have only just noticed this? I go over every square inch of my pups when they are born....I would have thought by six weeks you would have looked in their ears????? Sorry if I don't sound sympathetic - I do feel for the dog but I'm just a little gobsmacked.....

I DO go over square inch of my pups when they are born, but you'd know that when they are born, they have NO ear hole anyway :p Honestly, they look normal, it's only when you fold the ear right back, and pull the internal 'knob' aside that it's apparent there is no hole.

The puppy reacts to sound normally, has clean ears, never shook it's head like it had a foreign body, so I had no reason to go stretching & prodding the internals of my pups ears in search of an ear canal.

If you saw them for yourself, I'm sure you'd understand how easy it was to overlook.

By your reaction, you'd think I'd missed an extra leg :) But no offense taken FFAK.

Definately not LOL, I couldn't stop laughing when the vet told me, definately something you don't expect to hear! Only discovered when he used the microscope thingy, and even then he was a bit unsure, thinking it might be a bit of extra skin in the way, so he grabbed a cue tip & poked around.

Just the one missing. His 'good' ear is his off show side, so he'll have great hearing for obedience :p

Wondering if BAER testing would be pointless? Might have a chat to my vet.

A friend of mine has just bought a WSS pup and i have to admit, amongst all that hair i would wonder if i might have missed it too! I swear this little boy looks like a polar bear! So damn cute!

Im sure your baby will be fine LMWS. Who needs 2 ear canals anyway! :cheer:

BAER is how the shelties I've known about were determined to have hearing on the one side.

Thanks Angelsun!

Yes I know of a Keeshond. Perfectly normal dog but no ear canal.
I've heard of it frequently in Shelties. Further testing showed hearing in the other ear was just fine.

Do either of you know if scans were done to determine that no canal was present, or was it assumed due to having no hole?
