Dumbbell Colours

I saw a fluro pink dumbbell at a pet store the other day, and I'm in need of a new dumbbell and I thought a pink dumbbell would be pretty awesome. But I wondered if it would be allowed in trials?

*maybe a dumb question :)*

Actually that is a good question - mine's flouro yellow but I don't recall seeing a coloured one in a trial. They were either wood or pale grey/white plastic ones.

Not that I've done many so don't read anything into that. :)

The rules don't say anything about colour so Yes, you can use any colour dumbbell you like. Dogs don't see red or orange very well and if he is distracted for a second and doesn't mark where it lands he could lose sight of it. Most experienced triallers will use a white or light coloured dumbbell in order to give themselves the best chance. Anything can happen in the ring :)

over here there aren't any regulations on the colour of the dumbells at all, and I don't expect it's any different over there.... Any colour and style goes, as long as it's still a dumbell!!!

An interesting link re: the colours dogs see: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/canine...dogs-see-colors

Perhaps find out if it's outdoors (grass?) or indoors (concrete or other coloured floor??) and go for a contrasting colour AS THE DOGS SEE IT. ie if outdoors on green grass, dogs supposably see green as a pale yellow, so go for a blue or purple dumbell that will be seen as bright blue against the pale yellow....? Interesting anyway!

My rulebook (2006 edition) says this about dumbbells:

The dumbbell shall be made of wood and/or solid plastic and must be shaped like a dumbbell. It may be painted but shall not be covered with any foreign material. The weight and size of the dumbbell should be in proportion to the size of the dog.

So nothing about colour, but having said that I have an orange dumbbell and i agree with the earlier post - my dog often loses sight of it.

I will be buying a new dumbbell soon so we can compete in Open, and will definitely be getting a white one for this reason.
