persephone
This has been done before- something about 'double muscling' .from memory ;)
dog geek
Yeah, it is really fascinating... it is the result of a gene called myostatin being switched off, it happens in humans also. Myostatin inhibits muscle growth, if it is switched off muscles keep developing. It is a recessive, you need two copies to get the really abnormal growth. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Science/2004/06/24/512617.html Oh - Belgian blue cattle, ever heard of those? They have it too. In the US, the Whippet coursers like the whippies with just one copy of this gene - it gives them heavier muscling. So if you don't like the heavier muscling it is a good idea to look very carefully at your Whippet lines if they are American. Here is a link to the Wikipedia page on Myostatin Hypertrophy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myostatin
Kirislin
Yes dog geek, I dont think we have it here yet, and I hope it never gets in. It's not a good thing. They used to be called "bully whippets" They often also have a shorter under jaw. I think it's been seen in greyhounds too.
Shmurps
;) Why can't we just leave animals alone?
Loving my Oldies
http://blogmuscle.wordpress.com/2007/07/13...internet-abuzz/ More frightening than a batallion of Wendys are the comments on this site. Every second word is "F**K" and every second person is called a moron. Just horrendous. ;)
spottychick
I've seen some other nice photos of her running with her friends. The good thing is she seems like a happy dog.
Kirislin
;) Why can't we just leave animals alone? I dont think Wendy was intentional but the worry is that some people want to create lines with this mutant gene, and it would be a very bad thing. Those are not healthy dogs. On the Blog site, someone wanted to breed her with a pit bull - s**t for brains, I guess, is pretty common.
nellbell
Its a worry that some people on that site think it would be 'great' if she was bred with a pitbull. Must be all those guys with a small weenie. ;)
OSoSwift
I think from reading about this a long time ago that their heart muscle is affected by the condition and also just because of the sheer size of the dog. They do not live long lives. I think also that she cannot exercise like a normal whippet and gets puffed out pretty quickly. Kirislin - would the odd American Whippet you see that is naturally super buff - but not like that of course! - be likely to carry that gene? I have seen a couple of photos of Whippets like that and thought, geez they must exercise non-stop, but the people have said no they exercise normally they are just naturally built like that? poodlefan
I've heard stories about Whippets with "excess" muscle bulk that is incorrect for the breed. Genetics determine muscle shape even without mutant genes. Breed for more bulk and you'll get it. But it's not what sighthounds are meant to be. One of the largest consumers of anabolic steroids is the horse racing industry. I'm sure dog racers have toyed with it too. I"d be testing any very bulked up coursing Whippet for the stuff. dog geek
Well of course eedjits would be pumping what ever they thought would work into their poor dawgs - however, they do genetic assays to check if the Whippets have one or two copies of the myostatin inhibitor gene, as one copy will give you a 'chunky-bun' Whippet rather than a 'crippled with extra muscle' Whippet http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Myo...statinMutantVar iationsWhippet.jpg http://www.whippetracing.org/Information/Club_Notice.pdf Edited January 23, 2010 by dog geek
