jess live die
when pups are 8 weeks or older when leaving to go to there new homes dose it upset mum dog?
fifi
No, by that time the pups at many breeders are living their own lives in a puppy run /house ect or having time away from mum. And bitches by then are pretty much 'over' those needle sharp teeth ! & happy to interact on their own terms, and go back to their normal lives. Most breeder's stagger the pups going to new homes so there is not a sudden empty nest. I've been at my breeder's place for puppy pickups, and the mum's havn't even noticed. fifi

Gretel
By the time the pups are 8 weeks old they are a bit of a pawful for Mum and I do think some of them are probably quite happy to see pups go Mine generally go gradually and more often than not I keep at least one or two. Miss Danni
We have just had a litter of 11 go off to their own homes. Their Mum didn't pay much attention until about 7 had gone and then it was like "hang on, where are the pups?" She wasn't distressed, more curious and you could see her doing a head count and then looking for the others. But when she couldn't find them, she wasn't worried, just went on playing with the 4 that were left!
Sandra777
Pretty much the same as Miss Danni. Most of my bitches have always been happy to stand at the gate and wave as the new owners drive away with the pup. By the time the pups are 6 weeks old China is totally over them, once they start getting food from us her attitude seems to be - right you're feeding them, they're yours! - her grandam was much the same, but her mum was the ultimate baby freak and loved all puppies all the time. That said, all bitches are different but any breeder worth dealing with will let the bitch wean the pups at her own pace and separate herself from them when she wants to, so if she's not ready to let them go the breeder wouldn't let them leave anyway. fifi
Of course I'm only speaking of ethical breeders here, who knows what happens to puppy farm / pet shop mothers, whose litters are probably gathered up in one bundle & off for sale to who know's where. fifi
ellz
My Stafford puppies are 9 weeks old on Sunday. They've been away from mum all day, every day for a couple of weeks. She is really not interested in them any more unless she thinks she can steal their food. I don't think she could give two hoots that the 7 still here are actually HERS. As far as she's concerned, I feed them, I clean up after them...they're MINE now!

ellz
Sounds that way. For a while, I was having a drama with her cleaning up EVERYTHING that they left behind.......and leaving the most revolting farts behind every time she moved. But now, she has realised the error of her ways and doesn't even lift an ear if she hears a squeal from the puppy pen!
luvsdogs
I have a friend who minded a bitch while she whelped. She arrived about a week b4 she was due, had 4 puppies & she went back to her owners when the pups were between 4-5 w/o. I thought it a bit mean. I have no idea how old pups are when the dam weans them as I'm not a breeder.

I have no idea how old pups are when the dam weans them as I'm not a breeder. I did this with a bitch I bred (but dont own) recently. She went home as soon as the pups were doing well on solid food (~4 weeks). Her owner was keen to have her home and she was stoked to go!! As she hadn't tapered off feeding she had full boobs for a few days but didn't seem bothered by it. Actually I dont think she missed the pups at all until about a week later when she traveled with them to the vet for eye testing. They started to whinge in the car and she was like "hey! I just remembered something!!" :D But it she got out of the car when she got home and didn't look back Once they were older one of the pups returned to live with mum and now when you see them she is like... :D "ugh... did you have to let this one know where I lived??" raineth
When I went and picked up my Great Dane pup, I spent quite a bit of time just sitting there and watching the pups (2 left as the other 3 had been picked up). His Mum was still very attentive to them, and feeding them, and making sure they played nice lol! When it was time and we picked him to take him to the car; I felt like his mum definitely knew. She escorted us to the car, and even seemed to give him one last nuzzle while he was in my arms, and watched very closely as we put him in the crate. It was like she was saying goodbye to him. I felt so dreadful, like I was stealing her baby!
