Puppy With The Runs..

***The vet has been booked for tonight***

Bundy pup woke me up squealing at 1.30am yesterday to go outside to the loo. This is odd as he sleeps through unless I've been silly and given him too much water before bed. He proceeded to do 5 poops outside and you could hear them all they were that runny, and the smell :) He spent the day in the pen with no accidents but last night when he got let outside into the yard, he did 3 poos in the space of 5 minutes, green, sloppy and putrid smelling, it was a slap in the face for about 2hrs if you went outside, and there was a bit of blood on his bottom. We didn't give him any dinner just in case, and this morning he did pure green liquid poop... The smell is something else to behold, it's totally rank. He hasn't eaten anything that he shouldn't have to our knowlege as we've both been fanatical in picking things up lately.

We changed his food close to a month ago now, surely it can't be the food as he's been fine until yesterday??? We have them on Proplan and our other dog is fine. He's still eating and drinking, but for a puppy who normally only poos once a day which are never like this, the red flag went up instantly.

Has anyone else had similar recently? He's booked into the vet tonight but I'm not sure if I'm overreacting or not :) OH is home with him today, he's assured me he will watch him and check for poos when he's let out from his pen to go outside, but I'm still concerned.

I'd suggest you fast him until he sees the vet and then maybe put him on Hills I/D cans for a few days, depending on what the vet says.

Keep the fluids up. Something like Scourban would be good to give him but the vet will advise.

I wouldn't be waiting for tonight. Dehydration is a killer in puppies. A bloody bum is a real red flag.

He's drinking like it's going out of fashion, which isn't unusual for him, he's always been a big water drinker since day one and his attitude is 110% normal. The vets can't fit him in this morning and as he's still drinking and pinging around the house like a mexican jumping bean they're happy to wait until tonight. They've said if there's any change in his attitude to go straight in though.

There were only a few drops of blood last night, and none since.

If he does another really bad poo, I'd not be waiting BM... if the water is going straight through him he'll be dehydrating. I'd want a PCV done on him ASAP.

As a person who has had a dog go through two bouts of HGE, I don't take chances. Time matters. It doesn't sound like HGE but pups don't have much in reserve when it comes to the risks of dehydration.

I'm about to ring the OH and tell him exactly that, take him straight in if he does another runny poo, as you're right the risk is too great even if he is still behaving normally. It's killing me being at work, all i want to do is be at home to watch him like a hawk  To the point I'm seriously tempted to go home....

I'm probably quicker off the mark than most to seek vet advice on gastro BM but better safe than sorry, especially with a pup.

This is day two, and the only way he wasn't going near the vet tonight was if it had improved.. so don't worry I'm not far behind you in those stakes

If he drinks too much water he will wash out the electrolytes in his system. Even if your vet can't "fit him in" for a consult they should be able to set him up in a cage for observations and that way if he starts to deteriorate he will already be where he needs to be. They could also give him Vytrate to drink instead of water which will keep his electrolytes stable. If your vet can't fit him in then find another one.

Spoke to my OH, and he's still fine.. however on advice from my breeder he's being confined for the rest of the day. She's not too concerned, seems to think he probably just ate something he shouldn't but he's still off to the vet tonight for my piece of mind

EEk. HOpe Bundy's OK!!

Yes, glad you have the vet booked. Never let any gastro thingy carry on in a young, small or elderly animal. Vet straight away. Even for other animals too.

Get well Soon Bundyxxxxx

Update.

Bundy is fine, we are pretty confident that the offending thing was a piece of plastic from god knows where.. It certainly wasn't from our house so maybe it came over the fence. He's on a bland diet for a few days and precautionary antibiotics. As he was bouncing around last night she wasn't concerned at all and he's back to normal today.
