mumsy Posted January 19, 2010 Share Posted January 19, 2010 Hi everyone, We have found a breeder that we like. She has two pups from different litters. One is 10 weeks old, the other is 5 months old. Is there a better age for adoption as far as socialisation, settling in etc. I have read up on puppy developement and was wondering about the socialization side. But having said that, my recent addition came to me at 5 months old and she fitted in like she had always been here. She was just so easy. I think the breeder felt like we would be a great match for the older girl ( as well as the pup) but she knows it will be easier rehoming the younger. I know she is really keen on her dogs going to a good home. Both dogs are white boxers, one male and the older one is female. I may be wrong here but I thought that responsible breeders euthansed white boxer puppies at birth because of their increased risk of developing cancers at a young age. I know they cannot be registered and was under the impression that it was not acceptable for them to be sold either. Are they offering to give you the puppy or are you expected to pay for it? If you are paying, what health guarantee are they providing? As to the age, unless the 5 month old has been extensively socialised I would not consider it. Socialisation is so very important and will make your life much easier if you have a dog that is well socialised around the situations you will encounter daily. Bubitty Posted January 19, 2010 Share Posted January 19, 2010 I have bought both an older dog and a puppy and the only difference I can see is that the puppy is more people focussed whereas my older boy is very independent. This could also just be a personality thing! Depending on how much training the older dog has had, I found my older one extremely easy to live with and he just blended in without having to go through the “puppy dramas”. In all other breeds, unnacceptable colours can be limit registered but the rule for boxers is that white puppies are not eligible for any register. Agree on this and speaking from experience. Our first dog was 8 weeks when we got him and has been properly socialised and gets along great with humans/dogs. Our second dog was 7 months and was not socialised at all and we now are getting a behaviourist in to help with her fear of people. On the plus side, she fitted in amazingly and is quite independent, while also being very cuddly. If the older dog has been housetrained (also can be hard if you have to start from scratch) and has been properly socialised, I'd see both dogs and see which one would fit your life better. I also thought that white boxers were a no no. Am I correct in thinking that they may be deaf and blind? Not sure, but I seem to recall reading that this may be possible. persephone Posted January 20, 2010 Share Posted January 20, 2010 mumsy- have the pups got nice black noses/dark eyes and eyelids?..What about their pads? be very careful..if there is little or no black pigment ,this may lead to problems. Genuine Question as I don't know. If it is a Registered Breeder and the pups are unregisterable should they be at least be rehomed desexed?
