I love Vizslas, I used to own two, and I see you're in SA. We should make a play date when we've both got our puppies.

Aannie
OK so I think I have everything I need ready for my pup's arrival in a few weeks' time but does anyone have any recommendations on good books or DVDs in regard to how to train your puppy? I know the basic things like sit, toilet training, walking on a lead but I'm talking more than that like socialisation and not pulling on lead to get to another dog across the park, not jumping up on people, not running out the front door when visitors come over, the more obedience type training before obedience school starts. My loverly husband is buying me an e-reader for Xmas and I want to start a list of books I should be reading prior to pup's arrival and some good DVDs to have on hand as well. In particular, any good Cav books or DVD out there? I'll pop over and ask in the Cav thread in the breed sub-forum, too. My pup will be 10 weeks old when I get him so I need to hit the ground running, so to speak with regards to socialisation, etc. Thanks in advance! Miss B
Given Monya is our first dog, I'm just glad she is really smart learned quickly, [brag] she now knows her name, sit, down, stay, stand, crawl, shake, stop, no-no, hi-5 and heel [/brag] I'm really proud of her!! Oooh she is so clever!! How did you teach all those, are you doing clicker-training?? I think we need some new piccies of Monya
parrotpea
Aannie: Check out this site/blog(www.dogstardaily.com), it has heaps of fantastic articles, I have Ian Dunbar's book as well which is really good (Before and After Getting Your Puppy), there is a top ten list of recommended books on the dog star daily site under the store tab. Another book which has been recommended to me and I have on the way is 'The Focused Puppy' by Deborah Jones(they have free shipping on this at the moment at www.cleanrun.com) :

SmoothieGirl
Right, its official, the pups are on the ground - I'm getting a new puppy!!!!! Another Collie (Smooth)!!! Just have to wait and see how they develop, which pups get which coat types (Smooth to Rough mating) etc etc. Hoping to meet them next week from a safe distance, well for them anyway. Ah, the bitch had us foxed, she hid the little tackers until last week and then 'blossomed' and had a medium sized litter after all. SmoothieGirl
After keeping it quiet for MONTHS I can now say that we are waiting for a Finnish Lapphund show puppy from Taigakoira. We'll be getting her at the end of January and she'll be two weeks old on Friday. Congratulations. I'm a Facebook friend and regular Kepala goer with Terri and her Lappie pack. Tasha is a lovely girl. I keep watching the puppy updates she's posting online. Do you know which collar colour pup you are getting yet, I can go and have a look for him/her. Because we're getting a show girl, we're waiting to see how they develop. However, I do know it's one of the four girls. I'm watching the puppy updates too, and get very excited each time there's new photos. They're really starting to look like dogs now! Congrats on your puppy too! Dxenion
Hi to all, Found this thread when I was looking for something else. What a wonderful place to share the excitement of waiting for a new family member. We're waiting on our first White Swiss Shepherd Dog pup to join our family of three GSDs. He's coming from Sweden and the wait has been horrendous! We picked him out at 5 weeks old. He's now 8 weeks old and we still have another 8 weeks until we bring him home. Although he'll have to spend 30 days in quarantine, we can visit him 4 times a week. We've never imported before and it's a daunting process. I'm so scared of something going wrong with the paperwork and bloodtests etc that AQIS will send him straight back. We are working with an exporter in Sweden who has sent puppies to Australia before and that helps. So far the pup has been microchipped, vaccinated and bloodtested and we are waiting on the results of the MDR1 test. I received the import permit today and booked a space for the pup in quarantine. I'm waiting for a call back from AQIS because they listed his breed as a White Swiss Sheperd. Yes I know that is a spelling mistake and technically not the full name of the breed and I'm hoping they can either correct it or confirm in writing that it will be ok. I've heard that things like this can cause the import to be rejected and sent back. The breeder we're getting him from has been absolutely fantastic! She's sent photos and heaps of videos which were both a help in selecting the pup and so that we can see him growing up. She's been wonderful in getting him used to his travel crate and giving him alot of positive new experiences. We've sent her a bedsheet and a toy with our scent on it for the breeder to introduce to him a few days before he flys out. Although they may be destroyed by AQIS on arrival, we are hoping that when we meet him, we'll smell familiar. Has anyone else used this method? We are nearing the end of a two year search for a short coated pup with the right temperament and these last 8 weeks are going to give me an ulcer - I can just feel it! SmoothieGirl
Well I think the wait will be worth it, he looks gorgeous AND he does dishes, what more can you want in a puppy!
