How exciting Lisa! Not long at all! I have two breeders in mind, I have to reconnect with one in Mid-July to find out if a bitch that was mated late May is pregnant or not, the other has let me know that his dogs were mated week just gone! So will know more in a few weeks!

Looking into different breeds and thinking about what to get...

Preliminary short list includes (and will be determined by my circumstances, ie. Can I afford to FEED a Great Dane)

Border Collie

Labrador

German Shepherd

Samoyed

Great Dane

In sure I'll add more to the list!

I was browsing puppy listings and have seen some that are "limited registered" and "unable to be shown" and "must be de-sexed before 12 months of age"

I would potentially like to try showing, so would like to keep my dog entire, and if she/he shows well would consider breeding in the future.

Just wondering what the limited register means.

Basicly when a breeder puts the dogs on Limited Register they are saying in their opinion the dog isn't show or breeding quality and they are to be desexed. If you want to show your new dog you are best to tell the breeders that straight up front as some breeders prefer not to have puppies in New Show Homes so best have that as one of your questions.

Good luck deciding which breed to go for and I hope you find the exact puppy you want, and a very helpful breeder as they can be a big help when you are going to be showing for the first time :)

Very different dogs in that list, perhaps you can tell us what you are looking for in a dog, why you are looking at those breeds and a bit about your lifestyle. There are very knowledgable people here on DOL that might be able to help you narrow your list down smile.gif

To show and breed the dog must be on Main register, So you would want to tell any potential breeders your intentions with the dog and if they agree they will probably pick out a pup for you that has show potential. I would be looking for a great breeder that will stay in contact with you and be a mentor :)

Limited register is the 'pet' register, you can not show or breed from the dog and be able to have the pups registered, but you can still compete in dogs sport trials.

Welcome Phyria. I would have a chat to some of the breeders of the breeds you are thinking of so you can meet there dogs and see which breed might be best for you. You can always visit a couple of shows and get to know breeds that way. I did that, met up with breeders and then have gone from there.

Limited rego means that they cant be breed from or shown but still come with pedigree like you would get if they were main rego. Main rego means you can show and/or breed.

Hi Phyria!

Im new to this so I'll answer your question as best I can! Limited Register means that the dog is a purebred, and registered with its state body. But, cannot be shown or bred from. From what I understand your best bet regarding getting a show potential would be to settle on a breed, from there research the breed and find what breeders are about and make a short list of potential breeders you could approach to discuss purchasing a pup, go to some of dog shows and talk to breeders there too. Tell breeders that your interested in learning how to show and that you would be interested in purchasing a show potential pup. Building a relationship with a breeder is the best bet in gaining a dog with main registration papers so that your able to show. Also read and ask lots of questions here everyone is really great and willing to help us newbies learn!

I'm looking at breeds that are happy to spend lots of time with their owner, I'm hoping to get a job somewhere I can take the dog to work with me.

Not a huge fan of little dogs (most of my family and mates have big breeds so socialising will be easier for my pup of it isn't too little)

I don't want an "aloof" breed. I get enough of that from my cat!

Also trainablity is important :D

I don't care about shedding, but not too much drool would be nice.

I'm my experience. Great Danes drool! Friends of mine use to have them and they would wash the walls weekly because of the dogs drool lol.

This might be a bit smaller than you'd like - they are technically a medium dog even though they've got short legs - have you considered a corgi? they're highly trainable, love to be with people, they're not aloof, they shed a lot but def no drool. They're solid dogs and quite robust even though they're not big.

Phyria,

I'm a little biased but have you considered an Australian Shepherd?

med breed, males end up about 23-28kg, females about 3-4kg less.

Very trainable, like a Collie but less hyper drive

They don't drool and have a "dry" mouth

Complete opposite of aloof really, love to be with you and do what you are doing when ever you are near

Highly sociable if brought up right

with training knows when its time to relax and turn off "play mode"

adapts well to most situations

where in VIC are you?

I'm near Greensborough.

I'll look into the Australian Shepherd.

The Corgies I've met in the past have been kind of snappy, I know they aren't all like that, but they're just not a breed I think of when I try to picture owning a dog.

What about exercise wise?

Dog that is happy to spend lots of time with you, not aloof (more of an individual thing though) and highly trainable I would go with the labrador. Needs plenty of exercise but tends to get worn out quicker than borders. I find male dogs tend to be more Cuddly if that is what you are after too.

You would have to get the advice on people more knowledgable in the other breeds but my understanding is that Samoyeds, being a spitz breed can be less trainable, and Borders can be more aloof.

Danes drool a lot!!
