RubyBlue Posted October 13, 2011 Share Posted October 13, 2011 Found out today i my pup will be 8 weeks 23rd November so i get her the weekend after the 23rd, i bet that comes sooooooo quick I don't know bout that - I think Ill be counting down the sleeps so it will feel like forever but what a fantastic Christmas prezzie Have you got any name ideas yet? I'm so excited and can't wait for her to be a part of our family! I want to take the puppy out to safe places to socialise until he is fully vaccinated so I've decided on the local coffee shop and have coffee / puppy dates planned accordingly as well as walks around the lake or at least in the general lake area, I don't think a puppy will want to walk a whole 6 kilometers! But coffee and the main strip in town will mean people can stop and pat him and he'll get a lot of different types of people as well as see other dogs walk past. I can't wait! And then when he gets old enough I'll be taking him to puppy pre-school as well as ongoing training with the Dog Obedience Club here (BDOC), which means I will get to meet a bunch of people whilst playing with my puppy! *bounces in joy* Sounds fantastic :D When do you get your boy? Talien Posted October 13, 2011 Share Posted October 13, 2011 Hey chris, he will be coming home with me in December! :D time will pass quickly as I too am finishing two social enquiry units (snore) and have essays and policy documents to do as well as moving! I haven't done these types of classes before and I'm really pleased because I just got my first essay back and got a HD so I know I'm on track! Arty will be from Sisteam Goldens, a cross of Terrarossa Vandessa (tess) and Terrarossa Digsby (Digsby) and I'll get him just after I move :D Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My last girl had one from day 1 right up until year 14 (even though she didnt need controling then but she still preferred it) I did with my first dog - the club I went to at the time was very anti food reward and big on physical correction. It worked......sorta. With my second dog (rescue) I did for a while more because she would freakout and bolt and at least she couldn't get her head out of it. Now I use a limited slip collar and positive re-enforcement. I think its a much better system and ever won't use a choker on any of my dogs again. Zuess and Apollo had them but they rarely were on a lead anyway except outside shops. Collars You can also get martingale and limited slip leads/collars (one piece). I use Martingale collars. wuffles Posted October 16, 2011 Share Posted October 16, 2011 If you want a martingale make sure you are shown how to use one properly... they are not just to let your dog pull with a bit more room than a flat collar, or for looks... The main use of them is that you can still give your dog a "check" like you would a check chain but as they can only tighten a small amount, they will not "choke" your dog (although a properly used check chain should not do this either). It's important that this is well timed, the martingale is properly fitted (high on the dog's neck and very tight) and you have an actual training plan to go along with it! They are also handy if you have a dog that is able to back out of regular flat collars, or if you need the collar to slip off the dog's head quickly (for example before an agility run). Personally my dogs are walked on flat collars. I have used martingales for specific things (loose leash walking) and I have also used a front attach harness for more control while my younger dog was in training.
