WA, that's awesome! I would love that amount of time to spend with the pups. When did you know that Halo was the one you wanted?

So how long has everyone got now? Is anyone getting their pup around the same time as mine? (March 12)

We were waiting for another breeder to come and have a look at the pups. We knew that we'd be getting one of the three girls, and we decided on the car ride home that it'd be between Halo and Ruby (the pup that our breeder kept). So a week later when the breeder had made her pic, we picked Halo. ;)

20th March for us we've not seen our puppy yet ;) breeder doesn't want anyone visiting until they are 4-5 weeks old so only see some pics of the whole litter, when did everyone else get to visit their pup??

Still ages for us to wait - first week in April

The wait for me has been getting quicker as it gets closer! Hope yours does too.

How old was she at that stage? Nick and I have our hopes on the black tri boy but I understand it is also the breeders choice. We see them again at 6 weeks so hopefully we have a better idea then of which one will be ours.

Oh so yours will be home a week after I get mine. We will be going through similar experiences then.

It is fair enough that the breeder has decided that. I'm pretty sure it is to do with health reasons (parvo maybe?) I was lucky enough to go meet the breeder and her dogs when the pups were one week old. We saw the pups but didn't hold them or anything. I saw them again at 4 weeks. I think this is a good age to visit them because this is when you can really begin to interact with them. You'll love it!

That's normal. We saw Halo at 5 weeks. Puppies are a lot more susceptible to viruses/things you can bring in on your shoes/etc. A lot don't let you visit until after they've had their first shot.

And yes, as Naomi said, they don't really do much until about 4 weeks. They're just feeding little guineapigs any earlier. ;)

Yup - that's where we are at - we have to wait for first shots and vet check until we come visit, then they don't go home until they've had their 12 wk shot.

12 weeks? I though pups were usually sent to their new owners at 8 weeks. From what I understand the 8 - 12 week period is really crucial for a pups development and they should be settling into their new home, meeting other people and other vaccinated puppies. Unless the breeder does all this socialization with the litter?

I would die if I had to wait 12 weeks. ;)

I never met my pup until she arrived at my house, as they were interstate.

She came to us at 12 weeks old as that was the best timing for the breeder and myself. My breeder had done some socialising with other dogs, cars, vets, etc. We started puppy school at the cutoff age, 14 weeks, then obedience classes at 20 weeks. She is a very well socialised and bombproof little girl (except on the weekend when she was investigating the vacuum cleaner and got her nose suctioned in the process, then ran and hid next to our other dog for safety ;))

The best thing for us about coming to us at 12 weeks was that it was easier to start training her, she could last longer through the night and wasn't as attached to her siblings ;)

It really depends on the breeder. We got Akira at 10 weeks and Halo at 9, but there are other breeders who prefer them to have all of their shots before they leave. As long as they continue to be socialised, there's no problems with them staying with the breeder for a bit longer.

That is the practice with the other JS breeders I've encountered (however they also desex at 8 wks whereas we would prefer waiting until 5-6 months). There are about 10 JS (besides puppies) in the family and the breeder also boards dogs that have been purchased from him - so there are plenty of opportunities for socialisation.

I've read that pups shouldn't be socialised with other dogs until their 2nd set of shots (12 wks) besides puppy school (where vacc is required) and dogs they can prove have been C5 vaccinated (or titre tested I assume). Tim also does a lot of house training with them between 8 and 12 weeks - they watch parents and other dogs give the signal for eliminating (they put their paw up on a particular door) - being around others who are house trained means they are supposed to get the idea much more quickly.

During the 8-12 wk period they also go on car rides, to the shops etc to be socialised with people and motion.

This creates a pup who is a little more independent which is what we're after (since we don't have any other animals for him/her to be at home with during the day when we work)

as huga pointed out many of the smaller breeds will be desexed before coming home and will therefore be a little older - many breeders also think that their pups are just too tiny to go home at 8 weeks- poms and chis come to mind - they are soo tiny and fragile at 8 weeks that they are safer staying wiht the crew will a few more weeks growth has passed then they are a bit stronger and able to tackle childrena nd other dogs

Litter is due next week for me so fingers crossed there is a good bunch of bitches to pick from!!

Absolutely gorgeous Naomi. Soooo innocent at 4 wo.

Counting down for everyone.

Tess is awesome. Comes to work with me and oozes maturity at work, then it's feral time when we get home. I would be hard pressed to find a puppy doing more socialisation than her....but she is an ACD and I know how important it is for them. So far she has been swimming in Botany Bay, brunch in the city, afternoon drinks at the pub, met cats, parrots, rabbits and plenty of adult dogs. Played incredibly gently with a 8 mo chi and put a boistrous 15 wo boxer in its place at puppy school.

We have learnt not to get possesive over chicken wings, mastered the stairs and doing sit and drop off verbal commands only. Oh... and that socks are awesome to steal!

kirst_goldens- Hehe, I did reply to you the other day (you probably missed it) It said: kirst_goldens- Our puppy will be coming from the central coast of NSW. We are in Sydney. How about yours? Do you have long to wait?

smoothiegirl- Lovely picture

Jakemon- Sounds like you have been busy! She seems like a fast learner too! What breed is she? (sorry I am fairly new to the thread).
