Is It Just Me

easier said than done :)

I have a confession to make. I've always been one of those people who scoffs at neighbours who go for a jog without the dog. Those wankers, I think, not taking poor pooch out with them, I'm sure the dog would love a run, just look at them, all sad face and big brown eyes.

And then there's me who has decided, based on this scoffing, to never ever run without the dog because he is a world class expert on Sad Face and Big Brown Eyes. I really *want* to start running, but as the years pass I'm coming to the uncomfortable conclusion that it may be time to ditch the dream and just leave the silly bastard at home.

This is because today he tried to kill me no less than 3 times. On a 20 minute run jog walk that at times turned into an odd jerking, stagger.

Upon my return home my housemate admitted that he has tried runs with his westie and ended up leaving him behind as the fluffy little white legs cannot keep up. I realised that the long, lanky brown legs of my dog weren't making it easy either, especially since he has only slow speed and fast speed. I just can't keep up with him without being headbutted, tripped over, run into or pulled into the closest tree and peed on.

So now I will save my scoffing for anyone with a medium sized dog who goes for runs without them. That is until I get a medium sized dog and find another excuse not to do it

My son runs most days, and doesn't take his dog. When he was staying here, I suggested that his dog might like to go too....he looked at me like I was mad and said "No way, I want to run, not walk, stop, trip over him, drag him, get my arm yanked off......get the picture?"

Then later on he went for a walk with his girlfriend and I suggested the dog might like a walk too. He said they'd take the dog later....for a short slow walk. Cos the dog only likes short slow walks. And no, it's not a toy dog, it's an English Setter!

I've tried it (in very short bursts to see if it was possible :) ). The Tentie is fine, he keeps a good distance, but I can't keep up with him

The puppy, well that's just a disaster, she just thinks it is a great game and runs under my legs and inevitably trips me over.

So I gave up on the idea too

Pepper and I run around the oval at the park sometimes. Actually, what really happens is that she runs, I pretend I can keep up, she realises I'm lagging and turns around to give me a rugby tackle to encourage me to run faster.

We don't "run" when there's other people watching :)

I tried it with 2 dogs and ended upon my a$$...

One of my dogs is OK,,,but she gets puffed and keeps stopping, laying down, then getting up and running again.

The other runs like she's playing armies. She ducks and dodges, side steps, pulls, stops, races off.

No running for me...

Do two small dogs equal one medium dog?

For similar reasons to yours... a strange way of going jogging with the 2 tibbie girls has been found, at our place.

You know how you pass those high-techie joggers who have weights on their arms? OK, we have a tibbie, under each arm.

Who make grunting noises like the female tennis players giving their muscles all they've got. Except it's our muscles.

I wish you luck.

When D was younger and I tried to run onlead with him he would get really excited and 'attack' me and get tangled in the lead

atm I am running with him on and offlead.... offlead there is no drama, he sniffs and then catches up. Onlead I am faster, bit of a sprinter, but he definitely has the endurance and overall better fitness then me. I couldn't justify walking/running alone if I had a dog sitting at home

Orbit's not toooooo bad, but if I'm going on a run for me, I leave him at home because I get sick of the need to stop for wees etc. When I take him for his walk I do a bit of jogging here and there and sometimes some sprints, but usually that just ends up in him getting way too excited and wanting to play smack down.

I run with my Labs, I often take two at a time, and run up to 10km. They know when we run that there is no mucking around/talking to other dogs or stopping to sniff around. Sure it is not great running with a bag of dog poo but the dogs love it and it keeps them fit and healthy :)

ROFLMAO Hilarious post and thread hahahahahaha

I used to run with my dogs but they were all off-lead running along bush tracks. I can't atm because I have an idiot recently adopted dalmatian that has to be walked on a lead and has absolutely no prior training. So I can relate to the posts in here - tripping, dodging, yelling, pushing, tugging, stopping dead to sniff something, me arriving home red-faced and harassed beyond belief.

In fact, just before I read this thread I was contemplating just leaving the newby home tomorrow morning and taking my nicely behaved girl for a run to the river. She could do with losing the weight and she keeps well out of my way when we're running.

Might have to do that. :)

Buster is actually fantastic to run with. I don't take him anymore though because if I run into another dog its a pain because he's so DA and there are loose dogs the way I jog but mostly its because he has HD in his right leg and running along the road would only aggrevate it.

I either walk him into town or take him out for a run aroudn the paddocks instead and then when I go running I can turn up my music and not have to be keeping an eye out for any other dogs.

You forgot the swearing

EDIT: I think my dog would be ok to run with if he was offlead. He'd bugger off, I'd run after him and try to stop him doing bad things. We'd both get exercise. But I think it is best he stays restrained for the greater good.

I have 2 border collies. One loves to run and the other just to walk at a "nice" pace.

My sons happily run with Charlie and he is really good apart from one spot they go to which is like a very steep goat track - he deliberately picks up speed here - I'm sure to test them :)

For Maddy a walk is a social outing and serious exercise is chasing / retrieving something.

My knees hurt, my boobies wobble, my feet get sore and Jake couldn't be stuffed anyway :)

Love it I will use that as my excuse. I am definately not a runner.

My SIL on the otherhand goes running with two Alaskan Malamutes - dont know how she does it

I run with my two... Ahsoka sets the pace out the front (she's a great personal trainer!) and Jedi hangs out behind me. Works really well!! They know when we're running I don't stop for anything except roads - too bad if that tree smells extra-good! They are asked to toilet before we start running.

In all seriousness, I think it is something you'd need to train your dog to do - if you wanted to do it.

When mine walk, they are allowed to go either side of me, as long as they have a loose leash. This wouldn't work running.
