CavsRcute Posted January 17, 2010 Share Posted January 17, 2010 Just wondering whether anyone has used a ventolin type inhaler for their dog that has an allergy? My girl can't take cortisone and the vet has suggested this. Apparently you spray 2 puffs into a spacer and then you put it over the dogs nose and they breathe in twice. piper Posted January 17, 2010 Share Posted January 17, 2010 I haven't done it personally, but I know someone who was told their dog had similar to exercise induced asthma and it was suggested they do this before training or off lead walks. Ventolin can be bought over the counter at a pharmacy and then they had a kids spacer with mask and would hold that over the dog's nose. I would recommend doing some training first so they don't freak out about it. 1 way would be to teach the dog to put it's nose in something on cue and can easily be done by putting treats in something like a coffee mug or small yoghurt container (depending on width and length of you dog's muzzle) so they learn to reach in and get something out. I would probably get a mask as well, I think you would have to go with a paediatric one because an animal mask has a round attachment but the spacer outlet is oval... Lab lady Posted January 17, 2010 Share Posted January 17, 2010 I had an old Lab who had cortisone via an inhaler. She was fine with it, would see me get it ready every night and just stand there waiting. I used a child's mask and spacer and as piper said you put the mask over her nose and puff the inhaler into the spacer. I would then wait until she took a few breaths then that's it. It made a huge difference to her but wasn't cheap. I was lucky that the pharmacy i got it from started giving it to me at cost, he was a Labrador lover. She's a Cavalier, so she already knows how to put her nose into a yoghurt container She's at the vet at the moment waiting to have her tonsils out! I have also discovered wandering jew up in the part of the garden where she spends ages sniffing around.
