cowanbree
I have no issues at all with people wanting a certain temperament, colour or sex but when they start getting down to fine detail such as must have a full white collar and even front socks I tend to give them a miss. My experience with those type of people is that they are impossible to please and quite often cause issues at the last minute or down the track. Also re the show home vs pet home I pick the best home regardless of whether they are going to show it or not but if they are both great homes I would pick the show home. In the end I am breeding for the betterment of the breed and if it is a nice dog it would be a shame to do otherwise.
Guest Willow
Breeders...thank you for the responses to my question , and Jess, I'm sorry for hijacking your thread a bit there We have dogs, cats & rabbits (and soon skinkids!)here, so looks are way down there on the scale of importance......two heads, three legs & one eye would be fine, as long as we had the "right" personality to start with, to enable us to build on that & raise a "nice" family pet. About 5 breeds on our list so far.....
SpikesPuppy
I have been explaining to each potential puppy buyer that they are welcome to share their preferences based on photos I send out (and on visiting the litter as they grow), but at the end of the day, we will be making the decision about which puppy they get. Some people have been very clear about the gender they want, and that is fine, but the people who are at the top of my list right now are those who are open to gender/color but specific about what kind of personality they want (although I also explain that how the pup is raised is extremely important). A few enquiries have been based very specifically on wanting a certain color & sex with little information on what kind of lifestyle they live etc. I have responded with more questions but if they don't know then I really don't know how I can sell them a puppy. I haven't got any current requests for a show or breeding pup (had one earlier who's circumstances changed), so IMO for a family pet temperament is 100 times more important than sex or color. OSoSwift
My puppies have always been chosen by the breeder and apart from one all have been exactly what I was after. My last show bitch I got I was a little more specific, but when I was after a whippet the only two things I wanted was a laid back puppy and ideally a girl - more because I have always had girls. If I had the choice of many I would have picked a solid as I have had dogs in the past where sunburn at the beach was an issue so I wanted good pigment. Now I have Lewis I would be happy for either sex and the personality I wanted, and colour has never been a big thing for me. I did have a soft spot for Blue Brindle Parti colours (which I now have) But my first was a solid Fawn brindle with very minimal white. Rommi was the last puppy left, but she was perfect for our situtation so she came to live with us. Cath told us if she was like one of the other puppies in the litter she would have told me that she wouldn't have been suitable.
MsKatie
As someone who has just bought my first ever pedigree pup - I spoke at length with the breeder about our home situation - other dogs - kids - yard area etc. and she suggested a male as we have 2 females and she picked out a "laid back smoochy" pup for us - I didn't get a chance to see the pups so left it all in her hands

pie
I didn't get a choice with my girl either as her breeder is interstate, there's only one colour available so that narrows it down a bit in that respect, I told her what temperament I was after, all about the temperament and traits of my current dog, and what I intended to do with her down the track. I wanted her to pick because she has the experience. She picked me out what she described as the 'most people oriented' puppy, who is just what I was after and is my little shadow. Some people are fixated on the idea of getting to pick their own puppy though, when I tell people that both of our puppies were chosen for us by the breeder some of them find the concept quite strange!
