FranVT
Hey guys, I have some corn cobs in my fridge (uncooked obvz) and was wondering can I give them to the dogs to gnaw (supervised)? I am not a huge corn fan (KoRn is another story ) so I would like to get rid of them in a non-wasteful way. Thoughts?
Guest Pandii
Having seen a dog that got a cob stuck, I would not advice it, sorry I cut the corn off and feed it but it doesnt have much value for the dogs
WreckitWhippet
Corn cobs are very dangerous. I go so far as to take them directly to the bin outside after we've had corn on the cob, just to be on the safe side and to ensure none of the dogs raid our kitchen bin. poodlefan
What the others have said. They can obstruct the bowel as they are not digestible by a canine digestive system. Ditch them. Dogs can't digest corn or its cobs. Edited January 15, 2010 by poodlefan
FranVT
Roger that! Didn't think of them actually swallowing them! We never eat it - I couldn't get back into it after I got my braces off 8 years ago - but when we do I will make sure we add the cobs to the "bag of stuff we put out on bin morning in case the dogs raid the bins" bag in the freezer. Also includes cooked bones.
KitKat
If you want a huge vet bill to get the cob out of the dogs gut then.... Brother-in-law's dog managed to scrounge one (BIL didn't know where from) and yeah....huuuuuuuuge vet bill to get the thing removed and one very unhappy Lab. dancinbcs
I once had a dog that would nibble the corn off if I held the cob, just like a human, but I never give the dogs a chance to chew on cob. They can be deadly if they cause an obstruction.
OSoSwift
Definately no corn cobs! They get stuck like a cork in a wine bottle. I think you can feed them to some types of birds? Not sure about that though.
corrie
After I heard one doler (who is a vet nurse) describe the removal of a corn cob as a cobectomy and state that they had done a few cobectomies in recent times (if I remember correctly) I am now another one who puts them in the outside bin. Purpley
We also take our corn cobs directly to the outside bin and always do a corn cob count to make sure there are no more. I have seen many a corn cob stuck and it isn't pretty.
