Elfin
I just had a mind-blowing phone call from a qualified experienced vet. A client of hers has a bitch who's last two litters have has eye problems and she wants to breed from the bitch again. I strongly recommended the client get an Ophthalmologist to examine the bitch and discuss whether the bitch is suitable to breed with. I asked if the bitch had been screened for PRA or Hereditary Cataract (two diseases known to this breed). The vet's response was "Oh, no. She's just a home breeder, she doesn't need to do that". When I explained that there could possibly be serious legal consequences if she bred a dog with PRA or HC, the vet said "it's ok, they are not pure bred dogs, she mates the bitch to a xxxxx(another breed known to be affected with PRA and HC)". I explained that the new laws encompass ALL breeders and "breeds", but she dismissed the idea, again saying they are "just home bred dogs". Where is the system failing to educate these vets? What can be done to improve the education of vets, both qualified and students? (And WTF is a "home breeder"?!?!) Kissindra
nope, read it three times and still can't understand how a VET could come to the conclusion that it's fine for someone to breed with no care to health issues - particularly when litters have produced problems. Jed
Quote (And WTF is a "home breeder"?!?!) What we are all going to be soon to avoid draconian laws and dire consequences You can only breed "recklessly" if you know about it. some vets are good, some are bad. I spend a fair bit of my time stopping my owners having needless patella operations on perfectly health dogs done by vets who obviously are looking to make up the monthly payment on the Hummer. I like vets, but some are a disgrace. And they wont be educated, because they know it all already. They knew it all when they graduated, and haven't learned a thing since. Perhaps before vets get too carried away telling responsible breeders what they need to be doing in the interests of dog welfare, they should clean up their own back yards first. They can start with the puppy farmers in their ranks. Edited January 15, 2010 by poodlefan

Heidii
Vets SUCK....and I mean SUCK.....did I forget to mention that vets SUUCKKK?!!! No amount of education will educate these so called animal lovers.....all they care about is money! As long as they have dogs with problems, whos owners are happy to pay 1000's to have them fixed then they are as happy as a pig in mud! Just mention the word VET to me and I shudder! Just mention the word VET to me and I shudder! whilst i do not agree that all vets 'suck' as i believe there are good and bad in every profession, i do disagree with the amount some charge. recently had to take bert to a dermatologist, was $170 for 1/2 hr consultation that didnt include any testing. she got some sticky tape samples of his paws and left the room for 2-3 mins to put them under a microscope and that cost $60. i understand they are specialists but i had to see a cardiac specialist and paid less than that (and i didnt have private health at the time). whilst you try and plan the funds for vet bills, it doesnt mean that they are always reasonable. if prices were a bit lower perhaps more people would seek vet care for their pets. mita
I'd have been tempted to say, 'Were you away the day they provided one 10 minute lecture on genetics & breeding at your vet school?'
oakway
The vets will make more money out of those dogs. Of course the vet wants them to breed. All a vet gets out my breeding is the first vaccination and a titre test if I keep a pup. Just think how much the vet will earn if some of those pups stay in the area and have problems. Read the OT thread - vets, with 20+ years experience are earning about 80k pa. Grads are paid less than vet nurses for a very long time (eg 30k pa). Most of the charges to to overheads (insurance, rent, staff, quipment, drugs etc). Heidii - lots of !!!! and CAPS don't make an argument any stronger ;-). I have worked at 4 vets and only 1 was 'to standard' BUT they all care more about money than our pets. I have many, many stories....behind the scenes your pet dont get it, but YOU get charged for it! I have had peoples beloved animals die infront of me because of vets not giving a shit and then I have had to deal with the owners in hysterics while the vet hides in her office! My view is based on my experience, so in the end, vets still suck! You know how they say all/most medical care workers end up becoming "hard", well it's the same in the veterinary industry....they forget the reason they got into it! I have worked in the Vet Industry for over 30 years, and to say that all or the majority of Vets suck is a gross exaggeration, I have worked with many excellent caring and knowledgeable Vets, A few sucky ones but overall the majority were good. So based on my experience which is obviously very different to yours I have found the majority pretty good. There is good and bad in all professions, just as there are good and human beings. Elfin
I did not intend for this to be a vet-bashing thread. And not all vets "suck". I happen to work with four vets that do not "suck", and all four vets also have the utmost respect for the hard work that responsible breeders do to ensure healthy dogs. Elfin
The main point I was trying to make was the vet had either had no knowledge of the new legislation, or thought the legislation only pertained to pure-bred dogs.

They explained everything beautifuly and were so patient and gentle. They then sent us condolence cards and follow up phone calls to see if we were allright and offered us some numbers of councellors if required. Another vet from the same practice recently sat up with a friend of mine whos horse was sick, most of the night. When he became worse they called antoher vet in to assist but had to PTS. Both vets cried with my friend after the poor boy was PTS and where a great comfort to her. Not all vets suck.

Of course they are going to have problems.
poodlefan
Maybe the obvious method of educating junior vets on dog related issues to to ensure they get regular access to decent specialist canine vets during their undergraduate years. After that, minimum professional training annually should include some specialist canine seminars. I'm pretty sure this occurs but perhaps the quality of those seminars needs to be ramped up.
