Udx Training

Hi Guys

Thought I might try on here to see if there is any ideas in training the multi retrieve? different to what I have tried. We are getting there slowly but hopefully someone knows an easier way of training it as some people that I know that has been training it has been having problems even though they have trained there dogs to do gloves. Just thought it would make an interesting topic

Hi Xena98,

What methods have you tried for the M.R in UDX? I know some use food bowls to send their dogs to.

I think it's important to teach the dog to look at the article, praise for a good long look before you send him, or dont send but then turn to another one and repeat the exercise.

I always train with the articles clearly visible to the dog. I don't train for distance, but gradually make them further away as the dog learns the three turns and the look.

I place the articles in a circle, like a clock face and turn to one or another until the dog can turn with me, sit straight and on the hand signal look at the one I indicate.

There are about 6 of them, at eg 12oclock, 3oclock and so on.

Then progress to the 3 in a line but stand about 6 metres from no 2. When the dog can retrieve the 3 move to 7 or 8 metres. Wait until you get a calm fixed stare at the article then send. Remember have them visible to the dog. After some time the dog will be able to retrieve them without being able to see them.

Ok where to start. I did have problems with my other girl got it sorted and thought I would try something different. I had her looking at the article and clicking and feeding and did that for awhile and had the articles close and than sent her which was fine and slowly got the distance but that was when we did get unstuck a) we will get 1 and 3 but not 2 b) we dont do 1 and 3 but get no 2 but the other problem with her she cant run in a straight line for the retrieve she sort of bolts out more to the side a few steps so when I actually do no 2 she locks on bolts runs sideways a couple of steps and than ends up no 1. so than I tried to move more towards no 3 but still doing no2 she will run straight so I dont quite know when she runs straight or crooked. so I'm still working on it at the moment its the first stuff up and than we have been doing it correctly. Funny thing the other day when I was doing it my first dog that has got the title wanted to do it so I sent her out as they were both sitting there (I know naughty of me) Gabby barged Xena out the way to get the number 2. So we are slowly getting there. The frustrating thing is that she is a fast learner everything else she has picked up but this we havent but what I sort of wanted to know and I probably do know the answer to it but I am going to train my border collie and she isnt that smart so that was basically why I asked lol

cheers for that though I'll just keep on plugging away lol

Hi Xena98,

Like Luvsablue suggested, keep the leathers in close and in sight.. until she is getting it 100% and move them out slowly.. Make sure that your direction is correct and you don't accidently twist your hand in the wrong direction when you give the signal..

Is there any other problems that you are having with UDX...

I havent taught her the seekback at all. She can easily do the heelwork in motion, the sit stand and drop without moving, the sendaways does them brilliantly. The towels we are learning and she has got the idea that she sniffs and gets the other scent and shes not confused with the ud scent work and she learnt that real quick its just this mulit retrieve urghhhhhhhhhhhh. So frustrating. I'll just keep on plodding along and eventually and hopefully that she'll get it . Once we get it I'll start teaching her the seekback. I've only been teaching her one exercise at the time. I dont know what I will do with the border collie though have to think how I am going to do it as she isnt as bright as Gabby so as I am having problems with her I hate to see what problems I will get with Inka. Xena I had the problem with the heelwork in motion she couldnt do the sit and when she did the sit she couldnt do the stand and than when we got that fixed she couldnt drop and when you think you had fixed all the problems it will come back to haunt me. We eventually got the title though. After one trial I did she decided she couldnt do the seekback. Xena has been retired from that now and we only do open and Ud so its only Gabby at the moment training for udx

Hi xena98

I had a fair bit of trouble with the no 2 article also.

I changed my hand signal and now it seems to be working ok. Maybe you could try a different hand signal?

Beckie seems to know the no 1 signal (which is right hand on the right side of her face), and no 3 (which is left hand on the left side of her face).

When I was aiming for no 2 whichever hand I used she would go to no 1 (if right hand on right of her face) and go to no 3 if I tried left hand on right side of her face.

I guessed it was the hand being beside her face which caused her problems, so I put my left hand above her head palm down and when I said fetch I moved it forward above her head, and bingo!! She understood.

Now we have three different turns, each with its own command (no 1 "watch", no 2 "heel" and no 3 "back").

And three different hand signals.

Hi Luvsablue

I have three turn no1 close no2 heel no3 back. I have my hand straight out in the direction and I say fetch without moving my hand. I have experimented using different hand signals but she got more confused. I have noticed though (very naughty of me) have got exasperated and said gawd for a smart dog you can be dumb can teach you tricks in 5 min but you cant run in a straight line its just getting frustrating when I do it she does it straight away. So I dont know if she is doing it when I am starting to loose patience or what the story as she has done this quite a few times now. I have just been out tonight and yet again didnt do no 1 she locks into it runs 4-6 passes towards it and than goes off to no 2 was annoyed had my mumble and after that she has done all 3 articles did it twice. So I really cant work it out.

My hand is usually by her right head she doesnt like me having my hand or body over her like ie hand on her left side. dont know if its a coolie thing Xena doesnt like it at all. Just keep on trying

I too, have three different turns and signals for the MR. Tux (Aussie Shepherd) doesn't like my hand being over on his left side when I gave the signal and would duck under my arm to avoid it.

Just want to ask you Xena98 how are you going with the Distance Control? Can she do it all with out moving and any order? And what method did you find the best to do this?

I know that if we get a Sit first followed by the down and then the stand, that we have problems. he moves way too forward for my liking. So the two exercises that I work on the most is the MR and DC.. the rest is great..

Yeah!!!!!! Dont know if it was a fluke went out tonight and she did all 3 perfectly  Hopefully it has sunk in. Just had words before we started. Glad we didnt stuff up as we had one of those toy aeroplane running around in the sky and Gabby absolutely flipped out.

The distance control is no problem she can do it in any order and doesnt move. She does it perfectly I had been playing this exercise as a puppy luring into position and clicking with me sitting on my backside. From the drop she stands without moving her front feet. She is heaps better than my border collie we are on our second year with that exercise I might add just do a little and than leave it for a couple of months but I have found out with Inka the border collie the drop and sit has to be hand signal and the stand verbal. This is going to be interesting to remember it when both Gabby and Xena it was verbal.

Shall report again and see if we can get it first time lol

Hi xena98

Sometimes I practice with them close in, then after that she seems to be able to do six without a mistake at full distance.

It was the straight line which was the problem with my dog too. She's a cattle dog and also she used to run out to the sendaway area in a wide arc not straight either.

So I practised getting her to run out to a ball, no problem with straight then!

Went out again this morning and bugger me dead she did it again did 2,3,1 only the no 1 she ran straight to it but found a smell. I am so rapt hopefully we have it in our head. see what happens not doing it tomorrow as we are expecting 40 degrees tomorrow darn. Also went out and did my articles and she did them brilliantly as well. Gabby is a funny dog I have to scent my articles before using them litteraly 5 minutes before using them and than she does them brilliantly if I dont she has problem with the wood article. Must get out my towels and start practicing them again lol

That is good news Xena98.. Also with the towels, are you handling them or getting someone to help you with the scent?

Hi Kallistar

Well I went out again last night as it was cool about 8ish and i did 1,2,3 and she did it again so that is 3 in a row. Well now I have to find out if she does it at the dog club as this is done at the park without much distraction yeah!!!!!!

The towels I dont touch at all and I use a different word altogether. Xena,Inka and Gabby knows the difference between the ud and udx. UD I use the word fetch which means you get the one that smells like me and the towels I use sniff which means to get somebody else's scent. The other people use the tongs to put the towels out and use another tong to put the scented towel on so they dont contaminated the towels and it has been working

Hi Xena98

Do you know that when the scented cloth goes down that the person who's scent is scenting the clothes doesn't need tongs to place it?

Have you tried place the towels in different patterns and not just in a straight line? I found the letter A was a little bit harder to get my boy not to scatter the clothes as he tends to fly out to do this exercise

Also is she still getting all the MR for you?

I only have done straight line and a cross, cirlce and thrown them all over the place with her at the moment. She sniffs all of them till she gets the smelly one. I havent done a real lot. I still have to train the seekback she does the positions heelwork in motion brilliantly.Do have to pull my finger out. Had a four day break and brain failure lol couldnt do no 2 first time but than did the 3 articles. Havent been out today as its raining and the girls all had a treatment so no running for them today hopefully tomorrow night I hope

The articles are just put out with the tongs not the scented one. Also havent done all my exercises in one hit either

Hi Everyone,

I found the hardest pattern for the cloths was a circle with the scented one in the middle. She'd go round and round the circle, and miss the one in the middle, at first.

She's ok with any pattern now.
