Poor Riley - The Champagne Attacked

One of Rileys favourite spots to sit is under the dining table. My laptop is on that table so he's quite often sat at my feet, as he was this afternoon. I got up and went into the study and as I got in there I heard this huge smash.

I ran out thinking one of the lights had fallen from the ceiling, but found Riley running towards me stinking of champagne looking quite shocked!

One of the champagne bottles in our wine rack had exploded! It is about 1 metre away from the dining table and poor Riley got covered in champagne. I checked him over throughly for glass but couldn't find any glass or cuts on him. There was shards of glass all round where he was sitting though.

So lucky he didn't get glass in his eyes!! I can only guess his fur must of protected him.

So I've just spent the last half hour clearing up the glass (Which was everywhere!) and cleaning up the champagne (my house stinks!).

Needless to say I don't think Riley will be going under the dining room table for a while, poor thing!!

Oops, sorry.... I know it's not really funny & thank goodness he wasn't hurt but all I could think of was that Riley has been launched!

Oh well, I've never had a dog that smelt like champagne before. He's probably half drunk from licking it off himself

Edited to add - anyone happen to know what causes the bottle to explode? Its only a fairly new bottle, we got it over Christmas. OH was thinking maybe because of the temperature changes over the last few days - hot weather, then the air con going on etc

We haven't got anymore of those bottles, it was just the one, and we got it around Christmas so it was old either.

It was led down, on the bottom shelf of the rack, and has been there since Christmas. It was probably lucky it was at the bottom, not at the top, otherwise it might of smashed other bottles too.

What brand was it?

Used to be a regular occurrence in our house when I was a child... the homemade ginger beer was kept in the laundry under the concrete washtrough as that was the coolest place in the house. The doggy door was only inches away.

Easily 10 - 15% of each batch would explode from the yeast plant overworking. Never had a dog showered in glass although two of the pekes, for some reason, used to race to the laundry every time they heard an explosion and lap up as much as possible before one of us scooped them up away from the broken glass. Weird.

I'd let them know about what happened from where you got it...they might know why it happened or it might be a "faulty" lot. Either way, you might minimize the chances of it happening again...

Poor Riley, has he sat there again???
