Good Drying Agent For Ears

Hi all

I have an ESS with ongoing ear problems and it doesn't help living in Brisbane in the humidity.

There is very little I can do to keep her ears dry all the time, and she is a regular swimmer, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can use to dry out the ear canals completely.

There are many products on the market and things like EpiOtic etc just dont do the job.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Methylated Spirits. I used to use it all the time in my dog grooming, it cleans and dries really well.

Thanks for that. I do use metho as an ear cleaner but need something that I can put into the ear canal as well.

Milos Ear Cleaner, cleans and drys.

Something like Isocol - contains isopropyl alcohol - same as used in human products like "swimmers ear" which displaces all the water in the canal and then evaporates to leave the ear dry. I am pretty sure it can be used on dogs as it is a fairly inane product and non toxic.

Hi Liz,

I also have Springers and have had ear problems with 1 of my boys, he had reoccurring ear infections and it was driving me crazy.

Nothing seemed to help and the cost was getting over the top.

I now can say he has not had any problems for the last 2 years, I changed his diet to a wheat free dry, he now has Advance Turkey and Rice & raw chicken frames, I also treat his ears with Thornits Powder which is available from Groomers products, just google either groomers products or Lynmar Agencies, they are based in Vic and will post to you.

The Thornit Powder is fantastic. Have a look at his diet too as this can contribute, wheat is a big problem.

Aqua Ear. Use it as you would for a human. I use it with my guys after an ear cleaning (I use malaseb dilute) and have no dramas.

Hi again and thanks for all your advice. I'll probably give it all a go as its critical for her ears to dry out totally.

Hey springdog........Cleo has a pseudomonas bacterial infection that her vet calls the "superbug" and it's resistant to most antibiotics. How I wish a change of diet would fix it!!!

Oh bugger trust a Springer to be difficult,

Boston used to get yeast and bacterial infections in both ears, at one stage he had puss oozing from his ears and I had alot of problems trying to get rid of it, he had to have gentamyocin (not sure how to spell it) injections to clear it up which thankfully it did, he would also present with rods, horrible things.

Hope that Cleo gets better soon.
