Silly People At Dog Parks.

Whilst on this topic I have been having trouble lately with dogs taking our ball and running off with it. They love to try and avoid their owners who are trying to get the ball back for me. Half the time these people get pissed off at me for forcing them try and get the ball back.

The other day an oodle stole my ball. He is running around trying to avoid his owners who are yelling at him trying to get him to drop it. I was wondering why they didnt just take the ball off him. Anyway oodle rans up to me and I grab him with my left hand and grab the ball with my right hand. If anything I was expecting him to go for the hand that took the ball away from him but no he bit me on the left hand. Not hard enough to draw blood though. I know not the brightest thing to do but I just wanted my ball back. I would have probably used distraction with something else to get him to drop the ball if I had something with me. The owner saw me get bitten but just ignored it.

Unfortunately a few minutes later my dog puts the ball down to get a drink and oodle is of with the ball again. This time his owners demand that I yell at him in a really stern voice. Im thinking this is ridiculous but give it a go and it doesnt work. So I just grabbed the ball from him again with my right hand and the dog air snapped at my left hand. i was too quick for oodle this time.

I would of thought resource guarders would go for the hand that is taking something away from them??

Eep - and it's so not up to you to be stern to their dog - their dog, their responsibility. If Sophie had any interest in balls and stole someone elses I would remove the ball and pass it back to it's rightful owner and take my dog to a different section of the park, should the ball owner not want to have my dogs slobber all over the ball which is completely understandable.

This reminds me of another stupid person at the dog park on the weekend - a freind was with me and brought her 3 dogs as well as 3 others she walks and trains, and a girl, maybe 12-13yrs old was standing there squeezing a squeaky toy non stop with an audience of agility trained dogs who are used to squeakies as their motivation sitting as her captive audience. I went over to her mum and suggested that if she continues she'd better not be too fond of her fingers! She was just teasing them, about 4 dogs that she'd never met. Silly girl- although maybe she didnt know better. The mum saw sense though and when she saw what the girl was doing said told her to cut it out and stop provoking dogs and thanked me for pointing it out.

Whereas i know had I thrown a tennis ball up in the air and caught it myself, I would have copped a blue heeler in the head, lol.

:thumbsup::laugh:

Just got an awesome mental image of that

Haha - anyone that has anything to do with a Blue Heeler and has seen one around a ball knows what i'm talking about. Pickles is a lovely girl, but Ball vs Human, the Ball will always win.

Well actually mine isn’t into balls...or toys...I think shes broken

He is utterly obsessed with rocks though when we walk her down at the river she’ll stand there in the water wanting you to throw pebbles for her to catch, we throw them but never so she can catch them just incase anyone was worried

Haha - Mine isnt into balls if there's something more interesting around! In our backyard the ball is king, until its a chewed up mess, but at the dog park she couldn't care less when there are yummy butts to sniff, smells to smell and dogs to chase!

My thoughts exactly! Who picks up a stranger's dog anyway? By the feet? And throws it? What bloody idiot would throw a dog out of a dog park? Especially into a playground? That woman deserved more than a piece of your tongue, Kiesha. I would have threatened all sorts of legal action, starting with animal cruelty.

What a rude, stupid woman!!! What if you had picked up her child and thrown it over the fence into the dog area???[

Exactly! And it makes about as much sense...

I'm fairly sure that this woman had a few screws loose!!!

Hi ..

We are new to this forum and I have to say I have loved reading everyones quips and qoutes .. But I am confused, my understanding of a 'dog park' or 'dog beach' is to allow a dog to run and to particpate in social interaction with other dogs. As well as for owners to share topics (being from dogs to cars to gardening) in other words anything.

I have never been to a dog park, but here in Newcastle we have a great Dog beach in town and I have taken many walks along there and enjoyed many good conversations with owners when I took my past dogs there (who have both passed on now) .. We are hoping to go back in the near furture when our new baby arrives the end of the month a DDB. :o Very very excited about him arriving, although as he is not a very well known breed we are a little concerned about how others will react to him.

But back to my original comment 'Dog Park or 'Dog Beach' .. idea being these are created for the dogs to have some fun after possibly being locked in a small backyard or apartment etc, So maybe a call to the councils about signs being put up detailing that. the having fun part and socializing .. lol

And it is sad to think that there are some small minded people out there who just can't communicate with other owners or just like to stick there noses up and spoil it for the dogs.

Myabe that's just me :)

Hey Eaglereach what breed are you getting? How exciting for you.

IMO dog park interaction should be closely monitored. There is always going to be fights if everyone just goes to a dog park and lets their dogs do whatever they want. It is nice to socialise with other like minded people but I think a lot of the time their is too much socialising and not enough vigilance in regards to making sure your dog is not starting a fight, or excreting or pestering other people.

Hi Ncarter,

We are getting a dogue de bordeaux, we plan on taking him to puppy training school as well as any others we may need too. we are very very excited and cannot wait till his due date.

I understand that they need to be monitored at all times, I possibly should have put that in there also. I just meant that the ones I have heard off (from family members friends etc) in Sydney .. only ever heard good things nothing negitive at all. heard about how wonderful it was for the dogs to be allowed to run around and have some great social interactiion.

Anyway, I hope that we never have the problems or hassles others here have

We live near a fantastic off leash area, its a 1km long so most people keep walking, and most of the dogs are good, but there is one dog that I can not understand why they bring him there. He is a very large bull terrier and dog vicious, they never let him off the leash but he is so bad they walk with an axe handle, in case. As you get younger dogs at parks that are being taught recall and are not 100% dependable, how these people can walk this dog in an off-leash area I really can not understand. The other day I saw them coming so sped up to stay in front, but the older dog did a poop, so I had to call the younger dog, put it on the leash, put the older dog into sit position and try to pickup the poop So I decided to walk in the other direction, they walked about 7 metres passed me and turned around to come back, so I had to do it all again while they passed me the other way.

I don't take my dogs to the park for socialization in particular, but the GSD loves balls and the pointer is full of energy and they need the exercise which is hard to do on leash.

Hi NCarter

I'm also in Perth and there is a white labradodle that steals balls at our local dog park, is yours also a white labradoodle? The owners also yell at this dog.

Oh - exactly the topic I was looking for! I went to my local dog park this morning and ended up in a very bad mood... There was this lady walking her dog off leash and if the dog is off leash I don't see a reason to call my friendly dog back?! So my dog went there and I said "good morning" and got no answer - that should have told me something! So Teal'c run there and her dog was happy to play but as she ignored us completely I decided to move on. When she got to the water-bowel and started filling it for her dog Teal'c run there again to drink and she shouted "NO" at him?! Waving the stick she had for her dog. So both dogs started getting excited about the stick and she kept shouting at me to call my dog back and that she will take it further in case he keeps attacking her... I lost it

Why are people like that? Why couldn't she just have said: Good morning - can you call your dog back my dog is not allowed to play or I'm scared of black dogs!? :mad

I don't think you should ever allow your dog to approach another dog without the permission of that dog's owner.

But that's just me.

They don't know if your dog is friendly or not. Their dog may have issues and not like being rushed - previous aggression by other dogs, and injury that can cause pain if the dog is knocked over, or may have behavioural issues that are controlled as long as the dog is not crowded.

Sounds like the dogs got on fine but the owner was the one with 'issues' - thought a dog trying to have a drink constituted an 'attack' on her.

If you have a dog with issues, it shouldn't be off leash at an off leash park anyway unless there's nobody around, and if someone comes, you should leash it and go, so it's a moot point if others should or shouldn't approach - you shouldn't be in that situation in the first place.

I have a dog reactive dog. I only go to ON leash parks, where I expect other dogs to be ON leash as she is. In that situation, yes I get shitty when an off leash dog approaches because by law, it should be leashed. (my main park is a bird sanctuary and there are signs everywhere saying dogs are to be on leash only)

Meanwhile my boy had run over to the side fence of the park which joins a play ground. There was a child in the playground and his mother was inside the dog park. She proceeded to pick up my dog by his two front paws and throw :o :D him over the fence into the playground. I was about 5 meters away from him and he squeeled.

WTF??????????? :)

My thoughts exactly! Who picks up a stranger's dog anyway? By the feet? And throws it? :) What bloody idiot would throw a dog out of a dog park? Especially into a playground? That woman deserved more than a piece of your tongue, Kiesha. I would have threatened all sorts of legal action, starting with animal cruelty.

What a rude, stupid woman!!! What if you had picked up her child and thrown it over the fence into the dog area???

Exactly! And it makes about as much sense...

I stupidly asked a woman in dog park once if her dog was OK and friendly as it approached my rotty. Her dog had been playing with a big group of other dogs.

I felt bad judging her dog on his looks.I think being careful is sensible.

I hate it when people do that to me or assume ALL rottys are unsafe. I understand being careful and responsible and asking but that is different to bias.

Her dog was lovely and gentle he LOOKED scary. It taught me a lesson. He was a very friendly calm boofhead.

Oh come on, spill! I'm dying to know what breed or crossbreed of dog looks scary to a rottie owner! :happydance2:

It's not like you're badmouthing the breed or doing the media assumption thingo, you've already said he was harmless so please tell.

*prepares to fall off chair laughing*

Sorry do not know how to reply to one post only....

hortfurball he looked scary like a giant charging beast or rust lion :)

It was a massive entire ( VERY entire) rust coloured dog.I would say Ridgie X mastiff maybe.

The owner was a bit p/o'd at me assuming he was not friendly or social etc.. We talked for a while.

I told her a lot of people judge my dogs on their looks. She said she was sick of it and didn't care as she knew she was a responsible dog owner and that people will judge anyway.

She does the right thing and people will always assume things and she didn't have the energy to defend her dog all the time just because he looks like a lion.

She said that the last thing she wants to deal with after a hard day is peoples issue. She wasn't directing this at me but I did smile at it.

I have often wanted to wear a shirt saying "Dog is very friendly " when with my dogs. :(

I don't go to the dog park, but it may as well be with all the dogs offleash.

I walk along a river track and was watching a guy throwing a stick into the water for his dog to swim out and retrieve. They seemed to be having a heap of fun until another guys dog raced in from the side, grabbed the stick and took it back to HIS owner. Both men got in a big argument about the stick,,,which just amused me to bits,,,,as there was like 'hundreds' of them laying around..!! (men,,,LOL)

The other arvo there was a SWF having a ball,,,running in a circle then stopping so fast,,it's back legs would lift in the air (like it was doing a handstand) then it would race back to its' owner and get a treat,,,,run off in a circle and do it again and again..it seemed tireless and was like the energizer bunny!! Little thing actually had a small crowd watching and cheering it on..LOL

Seen an idiot woman pushing a pram with a fairly large dog walking offleash beside her (no collar, no lead, nothing). Dog spotted some other dogs and raced off across the grass. Lady couldn't push the pram fast enough to chase the dog across the grass so ran off and left the pram (with baby still in it) She went way out of sight and just left baby in the pram on the path, just on dark, in an area that's not very safe. We waited with the pram, for her to come back and she abused the crap out of us..??

My silliest moment!! LOL

I was running with my 2 girls. One on each side of me. They always stand right up and highstep so proud when running and I guess I was showing off a bit,,,until they decided to cross right in front of me!!!! Wasn't bad enough I went A over T in front of everyone but both dogs just piled on me. It was like a free-for-all with me stuck beneath both dogs,,trying not to let go of leads which were tangled and not allowing me arms reach to push them off. By the time I got up I had sticks and leaves stuck in my hair, covered in dirt and grass and was spitting like crazy after all the slobbering tongue kisses...

Well the other week when I was walking Berri a huge Mal came romping over to him and was practically trampling on him. The owners asked about Berri "is he friendly", well, I said, he is but he doesn't like be trampled on!! And just kept walking. They were well intentioned though and Berri did have a play with their dog a week or two later when there were no other dogs around (there were about 5 other labs and kelpies etc the first time also trampling near him) and their dog was feeling a little calmer.

As for people with big dogs who get offended when people call their dogs away from yours, don't be offended - How are they to know your dog is friendly? They're just looking out for their dog, no harm in that right? I call Berri in from lots of dogs, it's just not worth the risk.

When I'm at a dog park I have to closely monitor my dog for a few reasons: first he gets a bit fear-aggressive and territorial around me and other dogs, second he is little and can simply get hurt by a bigger playful dog and three he sometimes looks like prey to certain breeds.

When I have spoken to him when other dogs come along (usually "gentle" which makes him not go off at the other dog) often the other owner thinks I am worried about their dog! I have to say "no, I have to watch MY dog". So I see how a lot of misinterpretations can happen, and have been told by a few obnoxious owners "to relax," because they just assume stuff, but I know my dog!

People get defensive around their dogs but I'm responsible for mine and need to do what I need to do to be able to use the parks. I've learnt to handle how complex the human relations, let alone doggy relations, can get at dog parks.
