Nothing wrong with a bit of self defense(easier than carrying around a big plank of wood..I would do and try everything and anything to stop someone hurting my dog or myself. You need to be prepared these days.Looneys are everywhere.
I hope you and Sally are feeling better, take a can of spray with you next time, just incase this happens again,i prefer a mix of curry powder and cayane pepper,if not,use undiluted pool chlorine, give her a good dose in the eyes.

Yep, and anyone who'd casually recommend others assault a person with undiluted chlorine better take a good hard look in the mirror. :banghead:

Permanent blindness, severe tissue burns.. all for "self defence". WTF??

Some people just don't want to take any form of responsibility, do they???

Once I was walking Caber (Border Terrier) when an off-leash Sheltie approached us ( btw this was just outside my old house, on a main road), Caber said hello and started wiggling his butt (he looooooooves fluffy dogs), but had all 4 feet on the ground. The Sheltie suddenly launched itself at him and bit him :banghead: Caber did nothing, the big idiot just thought it was a game and playbowed- however the owner of the Sheltie started abusing ME and saying how nasty my dog was????? Caber was making some strange sounds- but they weren't growls, they were hellos in Border-speak (which, btw he didn't start until he became over excited after the bite). I tried to explain to her that her dog just bit mine and could she please put it on a leash etc. She wouldn't have a bar of it!! I ended up walking off without being able to get her details... I walked around the block instead of going straight home because I didn't want the old cow knowing where I lived (she also threatened to call the council on me etc). Caber was fine, just had a bruise on his neck and no broken skin but I was stunned.

The reason I didn't keep walking immediately was because I was attempting to get her details in case my dog needed vet treatment...

Poor Cabes, bless his cotton socks. There also used to be a little Pom who would spend time in his front yard with his owner... however there was no gate on said yard and anytime we walked past the dog would rush out and start harrassing us... the owner just laughed and half-heartedly kept calling the dog back before eventually picking it up (I always had to stop because if we kept walking, the dog didn't stop following... once went with us all the way to the shops!!). It never bit Caber and Caber thought it was great fun to play with but I always feared it would go fr the wrong dog :mad Council couldn't care less, either. They only wanted to know about it if I "had it contained".

Are you in the Northern suburbs near the Hume Hwy?

If so I have a 9 month old Rotty pup who loves all other dogs, especially his own age, who would love to go for a walk with you and Sally along the creek path. Just let me know.

It is so important for Sally and yourself to go for walks along the creek path again to show the BOTH of you that the majority of the time nothing bad happens. This will improve your confidence and Sally's and ensure that Sally remains calm and unstressed when walking in similar environments. The encounter affected Sally as indicated by her urination.

Hi Grumpette

Thanks so much for your lovely offer. we are in the northern suburbs but a little far from where you are (30-40 mins).

as i said, usually i do have company its just my parnter was tired last nigh. its always the way isnt it, murphys law and all that.

OT would love to see pics of you baby ;)

As requested. Taken two days ago. :crossfingers:

Don't worry about, I thought the same thing when I saw your post, what a wicked idea! Went off to make some of it up in a bottle! lol But then I am in the same boat, hard day and really bad PMS. :)

I would also mention this to other dog walkers so if they see her they can change directions, nothing happened this time (other than a nasty scare), but it may be worse another time.

Also, some one else may also have had a run in or know where she lives.

God that's awful, seriously hope she gets caught - I don't know who would think it's okay to walk around brandishing a piece of wood and threatening people with it, no matter what culture you might be from. Sorry you had such a bad experience

How is Sally doing with her walks now? Hope both of you are doing better.

I had similar problems with a woman who had two little fluffy / terrier type things that she often walked off-leash. Normally I got between her dogs and mine and defended them with a stick or my foot.

One particular day my then pup was attacked the day before when another dog rushed at him and repeatedly attacked him (thankfully no damage) ... so when I was walking him the following day and her dogs came rushing at my boy I just lost the plot.

I yelled at the woman to get her dog under control and on a leash. When I heard the "they are friendly" as they were snarling and lunging at my boy that I let her have it. Not so politely I told her that if I ever see them off-leash again they would be reported as dangerous dogs.

Seriously if that were me, that lady would be wearing that effing plank around her neck. No one swings at my dogs.

I'm with Pawprints on this one!!! I would have probably picked up a stick myself and gotten into trouble for attacking an old, helpless woman... The law goes sometimes strange ways in situations like that  The worst thing - that's how cool dogs can change into scared dogs  I hope the both of you are better now!!!!

Forget about the police. They have already told you they are not interested when they said they cant do anything without an adress.

The best thing to do is confront the problem head on so you dont have to worry about her anymore. Walk with your husband next time, let him deal with her. She only does it because she gets away with it, if you show her your not afraid of her she will probably stop.

Hi bertandsally,

I had issues with an elderly lady and her fat old silky terrier a few years ago.

Lady would stroll along reading a magazine while little dog did what it wanted offleash.

It tried attacking my GSDx, who I was dragging backwards as this dog kept approaching.

Lady just kept screaming ""get your dog away from my dog"" which was hard as her dog was chasing us.

I hit the dog with a stick and it took off. Lady abuses me and starts ringing the police on her mobile.

I took out my mobile and started taking photo's of her dog,,,,offleash as it ran back in to "go" my dog again.

Lady was actually talking to the police when I said to her ""just tell them your dog is offleash in and onleash area and I have photo's of it attacking my dog""

She hung up quick fast, then began apologising and asking me NOT to inform the police or rangers. She even began crying!!

While she thought she could do the "poor old lady"" bit to police,,, she was abrupt, abusive and threatening me.

When she realised she was "caught out" she was a different person...

I have even done this when an elderly man with a cattle dog was letting his dog rush in and out at us. I kept asking the man to call his dog back and he was laughing. I told him I would kick it/hit it and he said "try it",,,,,then I took out my phone and started taking pics and told him I was getting pics of his dog offleash attacking us and I would have his dog PTS. He grabbed his dog instantly and ran off.

IF you can have your mobile phone handy for a few pics it certainly stops alot of the BS people like that go on with.

Then you have an ID of the dog/person and you have PROOF their dog was offleash and not under control. (even if you don't get any good pics, it is usually enough to scare them into thinking you have,,,then their attitude changes)
