Testicles And The Show Ring ....

I thought that by the age the pup enters the ring - 3 months - that BOTH testicles have to be down and palpable. But someone said to me today that they give allowance to young puppies and i can still show a pup with 1 testicle (its sitting just above his scrotum but hard to palpate) and as long as it is down by 6 months then he is OK to be shown? Does anyone know the regulations on this?

His testicle is in his groin and i can palpate it when he is on his back, im hoping it will drop completely. I have him entered in his first show in 2 weeks but was going to scratch him if it wasnt all the way down yet. But i wont if i dont have to!

As long as rules haven't changed since I last discussed this problem, I believe what you have been told is correct.

But you have to sum up the facts!

As he will be noticed immediately, but remembered as the beautiful baby with only one knacker.

Are you very optimistic that it will come down???

And if there is an element of doubt, why not wait and put him in the ring then.

I have known many a case where the 'can't accept the fact' breeder/owner, feels that undescended testicle, and yet nobody else can!

One particular case springs to mind of a lovely baby Saint with only one, he even took out a baby in group at a Royal and was never shown again for that very reason, once out of baby class.

And when I last saw the same adult male, his owner lay him down and said to me "you feel it, it is there but it just keeps going up!"

But alas there was nothing there at all that I could feel.

I have also heard many judges' comment on babies that are lacking in that area, and even though age acceptable, they will not put them through because of such.

So my own personal opinion is why draw attention to it?

Wait......... and if it comes down all good and well, but if it doesn't, then no one is any the wiser!

Hmmm wise advice Lesley, thankyou. I guess i just love having new babies in the ring so was quite excited about getting him out there. But i see your point.

It depends on who i speak to in terms of "will it or will it not" come down. At 10 weeks, i think he has a few more weeks to get it down there. Some say months, but im not convinced.

yes, it is Dogs 6 months of age or over that "shall not be accepted as physically entire unless both testicles have fully descended and are in the scrotum".

so... with Baby Puppies they can get away with it ... and why would judges bother looking ??

Maybe to get the puppy ready for the day when the testicles are required? Isn't the point of showing a baby puppy to teach it to be a show dog? The testicle exam is a biggie for those boys.

It is 6months, but I have seen an FCI judge refuse a class to a baby puppy (he was even the only one in the class) as he could not find the other teste. Even though the steward & exhibitor explained that it was allowed here, and did not have to be down until 6months. The judge just said no thanks.

Try puttng him on kelp tablets. 1 per day. I know of a dog that was like that and after kelp every day at 6 months both were down all the time :(

Wouldn't stress too much...have had three dogs in two different breeds not drop their pennies until 9 months. If he is REALLY promising, show him until 6 months of age and then sit on him for a while.

Our first kept cav boy boy had only one palpable to me. Another "Queen of the Testicles" showie/breeder found it at 14 weeks.

I massaged him every night while watching TV and put him on some naturapathic remedie and by 16 weeks was down but went up. All good by 6 months.

ETA> We kept showing him, often Judges do not feel pups.

Whippet testicles are renowned for going up and down until they are nine to twelve months of age in some cases so I wouldn't stress about it at all ... its not uncommon to see dogs in the minor and puppy classes being fliped to show the judge a testicle that goes up and down. They are like yo-yos at this age!! Most judges that know the breed will give a handler a chance to push it down if it goes up ... one thing I would suggest though is that when you put your pup on the table don't lift him under his tummy as this with stretch his cords and make them go up. Scoop him up around the legs instead if that makes sense until they are settled and where they should be!

Thanks everyone for your replies. Im glad you all suggest getting him in the ring for practice, i like them to have some fun when they start out and get used to the whole show scene, so i will show him as entered in 2 weeks time. I had another "feel" today (poor sod is sick of me fiddling with his privates!! ), it has come down much lower and is just above the scrotum but still hard to palpate. Looks like it might come down eventually.

something from Pat Hastings talk in Sydney a couple of years ago - if the left one is down, the right may still come down. However, her experience is that if the right is down, but the left is not, it will (according to her) never come down...

Thats interesting thanks, ill have to keep that in mind. This is the first time ive had a pup with no nads by their first vaccination, but ill keep it in mind if i get any more. This guy has his left down, the right is just above the scrotum now, so her theory is correct in this case.

When my GSD had only one testicle down at his 3 months vaccination the Vet told me it was unlikely that the retained teste would come down. When we had his desexed at 7 months (we were planning to desex him in any case) the poor boy has to be Castrated and Spayed! Adominal surgery and a slit sac.

My point being it is vital to desex an animal with only one teste as the retained teste atrophies and becomes cancerous.

So at some point (clearly variying with different breeds???) a single testicle has to be "accepted" as such for the well being of the animal.

Still plenty of time to hope for the best for your little fella.

Our first ever Saint, (pick of the litter, show quality) was a monorchid.

Shonky breeder told us that it was down when we collected him but they sometimes go up and down.

Yeah right, when he was desexed he came home with an incision in his groin and another right down the centre of his belly.

The retained testicle that went up and down was found under his rib cage!

Was NEVER in any position ever where it could have gone up and down. :)
