Whats The Most 'out There' Thing You Have Done

I haven't done anything like already mentioned. I can't say I have done anything "out there" but my neighbour will say they think I am a little strange when I was following our rottie around the front yard with a rubber glove and a little sterile bottle to catch a pee sample.

There is also the time that the rottie was brought home from the vet after sedation and was desperate for a pee but was too wobbly on his feet to lift his leg without falling over. So there I was out the front of the house with one arm around his chest, and my knee supporting his body and I was holding up his leg for him so he could pee. Of course people had to walk past at the time and were looking at me very strangely.

;) Why do people always have to walk past at the worst possible times?

I wipe Kei's bum when he gets the runs -yes, even in public :)

Lucky it doesn't happen very often but I've had some weird looks :(

...well I'm sorry but I dont want skid marks on my carpet :)

- I designed the house in Woodend on half an acre specifically to suit Cadence (GSP) in his old age so he could sunbake from room to room and follow the sun, but unfortunately he was only there for a month before cancer finally claimed him...I took him to work every day for the last 2 years of his life after he was bitten by a white tail and had problems with depression if he wasn't mentally stimulated..the staff loved it!! (Tango comes into work with me quite regularly too...I've just realised that the dog crate in the warehouse opposite the packing bench has actually been there for the past 6 years :( )

- I bought Tango a lounge of his own.

- I cook all his meals for him (but I can't remember the last time I cooked a 'human' meal except for Christmas Days)

:) Think we are all mad!!

Ok, of course like everyone, spent HEAPS (thousands) on vets etc., travel many hours to specialists, bought a caravan for the dogs (for moving between states), bought several 'doggy' cars that had to have the right things (ie. aircon in the back etc.) for dogs, bought 2 acres with a pool for the dogs (for arthritis swimming etc).,

knocked back cheap properties because the flooring, stairs, blocks were not suitable. Have not had any time away at ALL, not even a weekend, without dogs since 1985!!!!!! (except for surgery! and then even after a hysterectomy I left hosp early to get home)

I am planning on an OS trip next year but have to organise my adult kids re dogs sitting at our place, so it is becoming a major major problem. I also may have to go to Perth for a few days soon and am freaking out, even though the kids are here to care for them.

Also, have had many businesses and 'worked' my hours to suit the dogs. Ie. home every 3 to 4 hours to walk, feed, play etc. and much more often when they were pups, and if OH was home (we swapped times) I would ring to see if the dags were ok, what they were doing etc.

have put my hands in orifices to check for things, AND saved a dog with mouth to mouth (well, you close their mouth and put yours over their nose!) resucitation! It really grossed everyone out (it was a friends farm dog) but worked :( ;)

Both the house and car were purchased for the animals. Ok I like them too but sometimes I think a nice courtyard would be lovely so I didn't have to spend hours mowing. But then I watch the Borders be able to really stretch out and run here and it is worth it.

- bought a king size bed (I live alone) so my dogs had more room on the bed. It's funny no matter how uncomfortable I am or how little of the blanket I have I will still not move the dogs, as long as they are comfortable.

Yep me too  It's sad isn't it when your on the edge and have little doona, but you can't bear to move the dog? :D

Now that is love. :)

Okay this is more stupid than anything else, I was blowing bubbles for the dogs and they were jumping up and catching them, suddenly I thought to myself 'I hope it doesn't taste bad for them' and went ahead and licked the end of the bubble blower to find out. Straight away I thought 'oh crap what have I done, this tastes toxic!' and shoved my tongue under the tap whilst calling out to my mother to read the packaging label. Sure enough it was toxic, how's that for a way of finding out! (I didn't manage to get sick from it since I rinsed it all out but no more bubble chasing for the dogs!)

No, we can't be mad. There's too many of us. :) I'm loving this thread. Keep saying, 'Me, too!' to just about everything posted.

Just a tiny thing to add. My tibbie girls are a a bit low to the ground....& don't like the grass ends tickiing their bottoms when going to the toot.

So I have my own electric mower, for no other purpose than to keep the grass very short in the part of our yard where they go. And a 'path' mown short leading up to it. That's between the regular times the blokes mow all the yard with a ride-on.

I'm glad I read this now I know I'm not MAD :D Like everyone else Lady sleeps on my bed, and as she's old now can't jump up so I have 1 long cushion on floor at foot of bed with 2 at one end and just one as step on 1 end of long cushion so she can get up as she doesn't like being picked up never has, get a grrr if I try and lift her. I also turn fan on of a night if she's a bit hot (will bark at me until I do anyway) :p but will put doona over me if I'm cold, people tell me I'm mad for this. Had opportunity to go with friend to Tamworth last year have always wanted to go but when it came to crunch I wouldn't leave my girl as per usual.

Used to go to rodeos couple of years ago with girl I used to know and would camp there, girl I went with used to get really peeved off that I'd take my dog and insist she sleep in tent not outside tied up like she wanted caused quite a few arguments but yes she did sleep in tent. also had her sleep in my swag with me also one night a smart arse cowboy came up a bit drunk and opened swag only to find a growling dog looking at him :)

When I moved house again recently I turned down the perfect place as there was no aircon and also because landlord said she'd have to be outside in a kennel (AS IF)!, A girl I was friends with years ago who was also a vet nurse so thought she should understand, used to get annoyed if we went away that I'd bring my dog also cracked it with me coz I gave dog a biscuit while in the car, told her perhaps she should change professions that IMO she wasn't much of an animal lover, but looking on here looks like I'm not strange after all just like everyone else who loves their dog's to bits.

I would do almost anything for an animal but not as much for people. Apart from the usual of fitting my life around theirs instead of the other way around, taking the bed legs off & putting it on the floor for a crippled dog I once owned, pushing her around in a pram so she didn't miss out on walks for 5 years, thousand at the vet etc I have to say the most out there thing I have done was for an owl.

Everyone thinks I am nuts.

Last year in the long heat wave I got a call from my neighbour. She had picked up 2 baby owls on the road the day before. Half dead with the heat. One was eating meat etc fine but the other was fading fast.

She said I wish I had a dead mouse or rat to tempt it. Yuk preparing it but the wild life carer told me how.

Stupid me said I have a friend who breeds rats & supplies pet shops.

So at 10 at night I drove an 80k round trip to get a dead rat for an owl

Now everyone knows I am nuts.

PS. The owl died a few days later but his mate made it. I was in :D

I refuse to add up the dog vet bills

But have lived in a caravan on a property for quite a while, until we could find a place that takes dogs. people told me to get rid of them, if ever

We now live and bought where we live because of the dogs and horses.

We had a dam/very large pond built in the garden specifically for the dogs, they are newfs after all

We have enclosed verandah's (44'x14') with screening, which is dog proof, because of the dogs, so that they can freely roam in and out and stay cool at night and be safe.

And we have not gone to many events/places because of the dogs

But I love them and will never go without them

Thats not nuts, that's lovely.

I once spent over $200 in vets and treatments for a pet mouse. Now that is NUTS :rainbowbridge: Hubby at the time didn't know about it. He would of killed me.

I've never had to pay a crazy amount of money for vet bills or done anything particularly 'out there'.

I had a very nice soft and somewhat expensive mink blanket with a gorgeous tiger picture on it. I used to lay it over my legs while I sat on the lounge, and when Darcy was tiny he used to curl up at my feet on the tiny corner of blanket that reached the floor  He just loved it. My beautiful mink blanket now belongs to Darcy. Its probably ready to be throw out though, he chewed the corners off and its pretty dirty

I'm pretty nice to OH's dog too. I let her sleep on my lap when she was dropping coat and got yucky big white husky hair balls all over my black clothes. Now that, is generous :)

My girl seems to be getting some arthritis and is having trouble jumping up on my bed. She sleeps in bed with me everynight so on the weekend i'm off to Bunnings and i'm going to make a ramp to put off the end of the bed. I was worried about 'grip' but I have some carpet offcuts that i'll nail on. My family think I am nuts

And put some strips of wood across from side to side at regular intervals. The non slip under rugs materials works well too.

Ha ha - my mum has piccies of her "grandpuppies" in amongst those of her many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. I think she is resigned to the fact that she won't be getting any grandkids outta me ;) .

My sister hates that there are pictures of my dogs next to her kids :)

....I've remembered that when Cadence was bitten by a white tailed spider 24 hours after I'd had an arthroscopy on my left knee I had to carry him (paralysed) from the yard, through the house and into the car without crutches, drive my manual car to the vet, carry him into the surgery (the vet got to carry my crutches  )...after we had stabilised him, I had to take him home as there was no-one available to stay the night with him, got a neighbour to help carry a now totally Aced out dog into the house for me....I dragged my mattress off the bed and onto the floor next to the door in the family room and that's where we slept for the next month....the only way I could get up off the mattress was to do the 'pregnant woman roll'...for 5 days I had to bodily carry him outside to go to the toilet and hold him up so he could do what he needed to do.....I always wondered if that's why I still have trouble with the knee because it was never given a chance to heal.....

Glad to see I'm not the only one! Of course, some of these things are as much to make my life easier as it is for them, but the dogs do get the main benefit! :)

I bought a $50,000+ Mercedes for my dogs and for me of course, but the particular model etc was chosen because the back seats folded completely flat, and also when folded down the "floor" is lower than in other cars that I looked at (and I looked at heaps of different brands/models).

Newcar251008a.jpg

Also my OH concreted and tiled the under the house area that the dogs use so they will be more comfortable (also easier to keep clean). There is a specific dog food preparation kitchen under the house and they have their own fridge and freezer for their food, also their own microwave. Oh yeah, and I bought them their own washing machine for their blankies/coats etc because I didn't want to have dog hair in my people clothes washing machine! :)

What have we done for our dogs

1 Bought the house on 1/2 acre

Then built the kennels and garage :)

Bought the block next door because the 1/2 acre was full of kennels and garage

Bought a crap dogtrailer just so the dogs could eat in it - the dining car so to speak

Then bought a better trailer to take the dogs away in.

Only go on holidays if the 'kids' can come with us

Put air conditioning in the lounge for the pups

Isulated the verandah - for the pups

It all sounds normal stuff to me!!! :)
