Final Toilet Stop For The Night = Extreme Yard Patrol

This is fairly normal behaviour - particularly for guarding breeds/dogs, terriers etc. Some do and some some don't. A couple of mine do it, but I have encouraged "quiet" patrols, rather than loud ones. They still rush around, checking the boundarier, but they are quiet when they do it.

Good suggestions here that will work.

Also, if she is a young dog, she may grow out of it. Young dogs are learners. :D

Nope right in suburbia, but she only lets out 4 or 5 single barks max so the barking isn't the issue, its more her INTENSE patrolling persona she puts on lol.

her barking might not be an issue for you but it very well might be for your neighbours

My girls do the nightly perimeter patrol as we get a lot of stray cats in the yard at night. They don't bark, they scent out with noses to the ground( like Bloodhounds ) and do not miss one inch of the yard. They only time they have barked was when two stray cats were actually on the grass in our yard and they both gave chase but once the cats were out of the yard they stopped barking( talking a couple of minutes here).

I am pleased that they do that as they would smell the scent of a strange human and alert me to the fact.

Mine do it too (not that i let them anyore). I now just leave the back door open til it is their bed time and that has solved the problem.

Hey there,

Zoe used to do a loud barking run along the fence when we let her out late at night so we now take her out on long lead and she still has her hackles up sometimes as she knows there is "prob" something on the fence or up a tree but if she barks we can bring he in because at 11pm i dont like her waking the neighbours....

our GSD did it for a couple of weeks, but a bit earlier in the evening and eventually we discovered there were rats. We got rid of the rats and it took almost a month before she stopped doing it.

Beware of that phrase "got rid of the rats" -- you never really do, you have just killed off one generation and if your property was attractive for the first lot, it will be recolonised. I blocked up holes, put out bait stations etc and for a while there was peace, but unless you can persuade your neighbours to also take action, within a few months the rats will return. But at least you dog will let you know that has happened......
