piper
Where is Dova? She has a brag or 2 or 4 or something! It has been a huge herding weekend over here. No brag for me, jazz only had 1 run as I was also judging and we ruined our perfect record because she needs a new handler. I am thrilled with her work outside the trial ring as I have asked her to do a lot this weekend even finding sheep that she could not see and fetching them to me without me entering the paddock. ness
she is probably out compiling an article for the local paper if what she said yesterday is anything to go by piper .

ness
Back on the herding - Jazz was certainly doing some nice useful stuff at the clinic on Saturday Piper. Considering she gets very infrequent access to stock she is doing exceedingly well I think.
piper
Back on the herding - Jazz was certainly doing some nice useful stuff at the clinic on Saturday Piper. Considering she gets very infrequent access to stock she is doing exceedingly well I think. Thanks Ness. She blows me away at times. The level of work she was giving me this weekend was so far above what I have ever asked and she hasn't seen sheep since last August! I was disappointed not to be able to collect the strays on Saturday but it was her only hiccup for the weekend and a difficult task. Her hiccup yesterday was that her handler was useless Today she was literally pushed into the paddock twice (under the fence) and each time found the sheep and brought them back unassisted and in a nice calm fashion. ness
Go Jazz . I really gotta make an effort to get Kenz to a few more herding lessons if we are going to make any progress. She really enjoys it though so I should try and find some time.
RubyStar
Dummy question but how do you train for herding? Is there equal handler skills required to dog skills or is it all the dog?
piper
Dummy question but how do you train for herding? Is there equal handler skills required to dog skills or is it all the dog? Definitely handler skills as well. You need to learn to read the stock to know where to position yourself and the dog to get the stock where you want. For example yesterday on the ducks I was standing too close to the obstacle so the ducks would not go in no matter what the dog did as I was essentially blocking their path. Learning to read the stock takes time and patience - watching others is good as oyu can see what happens more easily than when you are trying to think about the dog as well. ness
Oh god yeah I have no idea what I am suppose to be doing which makes Kenz's job even more difficult and we aren't even actually doing much yet . Although I did think I did well to remember some of what more experienced people had told me from watching her first instinct test video about taking her by the collar in training to get her in behind the stock to move the stock off the fences and keep her switched on . Dova
I did have a brag on the herding HT thread but I will force myself to do it again . Well here goes, Izzi got High in Trial on 96 points & her HSA title, Pebbles got R/U High in Trial on 91 points & her HSA title & Delta passed both her PT tests got the judges encouragement prize & her PT title, so I'm, still, doing a bit of ;) & even a can't imagine why it wasn't THAT special . I'm so proud of my girls they worked well, Pebbles would have done better in the first test but I missunderstood what the judge said & made a mistake , no biggie she still did what I asked. Now I better go & deflate my ego before it gets to big to control .

piper
HUGE congrats to Dova and your girls!! ^^ sounds like an amazing trial! It was. We had HEAPS of runs compared to what we normally do. 44 on sheep and 25ish on ducks I think. Quite a few titles gained at trial level on both stock types as well as instinct and pre trial tests. Hardly anyone walked away without at least 1 pass over the weekend (I was 1 of the few but only had the 1 run).

mirawee
I put my results in the Nationals thread ;) My only highlight from today was Abbey finally gained her last leg for ADX today. So it only took 2 years after she managed to gain her AD in her first 3 trials And she is through to the finals on Sunday so should give the crowd lots to laugh about as chances of her getting another clear in ADX over the next 3 days are very slim ;)
Ptolomy
Rivsky has just gone to bed - so I am going to brag on her behalf ;) Riv was a star coming 2nd in excellent agility and he also finished 6th in excellent gamblers He was a star and won a truck load of prizes - Rivsky is definitely going back with excess luggage Sexy Lexi finished 2nd in excellent jumping and also made the final on Sunday Beans qualified in Open agility and finished 6th - this was a hugh surprise ;)
ness
Way to go mirawee, Rivsky and Ptolomy. As I just said in a text message to Rivsky - go gettem Riv on Sunday - Ness says something about some unfinished business in the excellent agility finals from the Adelaide 2007 Nationals when a certain black and white dog thought she would back jump the spread ;) . And don't worry tell Riv I'll send the pocket rocket energy reserves over in a padded express bag first thing in the morning . Good luck tomorrow everybody ;).
