YoungBoy
Hi everyone, My beautiful Jack Russell, Max who is 9 months old, is still not toilet trained, I wonder what I have done wrong and how I can correct it before it's too late. I live in a terrace house in Redfern, Sydney. Max has been living in the courtyard since he was 5 months old. The kitchen/sun room area opens into the courtyard through a double sliding doors, a double sliding panels with mosquito net and then a double security grill. It would be perfect if I can have a dog hole in the door but with these 3 layers of doors in the way and security issue in this area, I don't think it's possible unless I spend big bucks to redo all the doors. There is a small landing before you step down into the courtyard with a 3 steps stairs. Max's kennel is on the landing where he sleeps, we put a pet loo at the far end of the courtyard, which is 4m x 8m with 10 m walls on the other 3 sides. We started training Max to use the puppy training pad when we first got him, when he was 8 weeks old. He was using it fine. As soon as we moved him out into the courtyard when he was 5 months old. Max soon started to poo and wee all over the courtyard. We tried getting him to poo and wee on the training pad but he will only sit there for hours and stared at us. He usually chewed the training pad into pieces when we are not looking. And poo and wee wherever he likes when we took our eyes off him. We let him poo and wee in the courtyard after a while, we think it's no point putting down the training pad, which he would eventually chewed into pieces. I regretted that we let him have the freedom to do that, for about 2 month, and we only learned about The Pet Loo much later. We were shocked to learned that we need to spend so much for things like this. We bit the bullet and spent the bucks anyway. It's after 2 months now, we follow the video's instructions, spending many hours of supervising and luring with treats to get Max to poo and wee on the loo, he has not once did it on the bloody loo. He did the same thing, just sit there and stared at us. Can anyone please give a piece of your advice, what have I done wrong? Why does Max not poo and wee on the loo? Why does he still poo and wee in the house? Some friends think that he wants to claim his territory, is that true? What should we do to change his behavior? Your help is much appreciated. bedazzledx2
I will first preface this by saying I don't have any experience with the Pet Loo, however, I have seen them in the shops and wondered just how successful they would be with a dog. You would have to be incredibly consistent with your training and that's where I think things have gone wrong. It sounds like Max has the run of the courtyard but doesn't know a place to eliminate. He is simply not educated properly to do so and it has NOTHING to do with claiming territory!!!! Reverting to eliminating in the house means he isn't toilet trained and everytime he does it get a rolled up newspaper and whack yourself over the head!!!!! Sorry but it not his fault. I would take my training back to baby puppy. Pretend he is a puppy and doesn't know anything. Because he has free access to the courtyard and has done for so long you are up against it in re-training, sorry. I guess he is there when there is nobody home? If you can bring yourself to crate him inside when he's not supervised it would make your job much, much easier. You can get large C Crates with no floor which are ideal for this and they fold up out of the way easily for when he is trained. Can you take the top bit off the Pet Loo and just use that? If you can that would be good and you can put it down where you want him to go. If not then for the moment put it away and decide on an area in the courtyard you can live with him going. What you want to train is for Max to go to a place to eliminate. Have him inside free with you when you can supervise him. After he's eaten, put him on lead and take him to his spot. Give a toileting word without too much fuss...he won't have a clue what it means initially but that will change. He is on lead so can't go anywhere else. If he does go then quietly calmly praise him giving the toileting word. Mine is good boy, busy dog, good boy, busy dog all said in a gentle monotone. Bring him back inside and let him free for a while but still supervise. Same thing after a sleep, play, food, time. BE CONSISTENT! Rinse and repeat. If he doesn't go then say nothing, bring him inside and try again in a short while. Your job is to prevent him accidentally going inside and to give him every opportunity to go outside in his spot. If he makes a mistake, say nothing, put him on lead and take him to his spot. Clean up using a non-ammonia product. Another cue that I find useful is to ask the dog if they want to go outside as I'm taking them out. Eventually this morphs into the dog going to the door when he wants to go. SeeGee
Quick question for my knowledge - why non amonia? im sorry if its obvious, but im going to go home and check my products - im concerned mine are amonia based - may answer a few of my own toilet training issues! Thanks Jacqui
bedazzledx2
Ammonia smells like urine and can cause the dog to continue to pee on that spot. Its the high levels of nitrates in both. Dogsfevr
What is Max's daily routine?? Do you for daily walks so he can romp around & toilet or is toileting solely reliant on the pet loo??? How much interaction with grass does he get daily?? I would say Max is very confused by what you want & toileting in the house is what is normal to him & what he was trained to do. You need to go back to basics & start again & be very patient & i alos wouldnt rely on the pet loo for his only means to toilet, most terrace owners walk there dog for toileting & have an area set aside for emergencies only
