To hijack the thread... We have a 430... Is it worth getting a 580? Obviously there's a difference...

The 430 is my OH's flash and I think I'm bugging him by having it all the time (similar to what happened with me 'borrowing' his 50D  )

TN - if you're adding a flash, defo go the 580

Righto!

OH bought me a 50mm 1.4 for Chrissie so I have all this extra 'camera money' to spend! It might not quite get me the 70-200 on my list  , but it could stretch to get another flash!

I want to branch out more into lighting next year and want to experiment with off-camera lighting.

I use Elinchrom triggers for OCF. PocketWizards are super nice, too, but very expensive.

Cactus triggers are available on ebay for a fraction of the cost and mine were actually reliable. Go to POTN and search around for the Cactus info as they can be a great, inexpensive way to start. there's also info there on getting the best out of them etc.

I found the Canon IR system couldn't cope with our bright daylight and couldn't be bothered trying to figure out how to make it work, so I use the triggers all the time virtually now.

Triggers.

Infrared are great, but they don't like bright sunlight

cheapie radio triggers will work BUT unless they are made for Australian frequencies, you may experience interference from other people/items using the same radio frequency - this is why Pocket Wizards are so expensive, when you buy the ones that are particularly for the Australian market, they are set to the correct frequency where there is very little traffic/gerenal use and therefore it's more reliable.

We have pocket wizard and also IR triggers. We use the pocket wizard most of the time but will still pull out the IR trigger at times.
