Dobeliscious Posted December 16, 2009 Share Posted December 16, 2009 Hi there, my dog has somehow lost the skin on one of her paw pads, it's not right across the base but down the whole of one side. She is walking around allright and is licking it clean. Is there any ointment that I can buy to help the healing process or should she be looked at by a vet? My mums dog had this happen,we were in the pool on a hot day,the dog kept running around the pool on the hot pavers,he burnt all 4 pads off his paws,he was in no pain though.We called the vet straight away and he told us to put some antiseptic cream on them,wrap them with bandages and try to keep him off his paws for a day or 2,and they will heal by themslves.Which they did,but they got sore after a while and then got better,the only real hassle was trying to stop him eating the bandages off. So her pad should heal by itself,just make sure it does not get infected and keep it clean,put a bit of soothing antiseptic cream on it and bandage it for a few days,and she should be back to normal. I have some aloe growing in the garden which is what I would use on the children, can this be used on dogs? She spends a lot of time licking it, I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not? Hi Mars, i wouldnt use aloe direct from a plant,aloe plants are poisonous for dogs,so i have been told.But you can use products containing aloe,just not directly from the plant itself. The vet told us to use whatever we had,i think we used Bettadine,so i would say you can use a normal human antiseptic,nothing too harsh like pure dettol or anything,just a everyday antiseptic cream ,or you can go and buy some special dog antiseptic cream from a pet shop or a vets,but if you have it,just use it. Licking it (the dog that is )is fine,it will help heal it,but just always be on the look out for swelling or discolouration,as an infection will prolong the healing procecss and a vet visit would be advisable. Most likely you will be better off just letting her lick it,alot less hassle if it is not bothering her too much.Try the anitseptic cream and see how you go,it cant hurt.Good luck with her,let us know how she goes. Tilly Posted December 18, 2009 Share Posted December 18, 2009 I usually use PawPaw ointment (red tube/tub in chemist). Our pup cut his toes on the hedge trimmer and I used the cream 2 or 3 times a day. I also used a little bootie on his foot when I took him out for his walks or let him run around as this helped provide some extra protection to the foot. I was told it takes atleast 6 weeks for a foot to heal fully .... not sure how true that is but I kept the pup's boot on for that long just to be on the safe side. We have working kelpies and BC's and have had them wear the pads of thier feet, sometimes it can happen really easily. We have found that they may be sore footed for a few days, but after that they will be fine.
