Rozzie
They are doing my head in this year. Dogs have been Frontlined, Advantixed, bathed in anti flea shampoo and still the biting little buggers persist. Could it be the lack of rain? I wouldn't have a clue what to do about them in the ground.
t-time
You can sprinkle Lime or around your yard - if you lime, you have to keep the dogs off the ground for 24 hours or else hose in the lime powder. If there are that many fleas on the ground you need to do something reasonably toxic to get rid of them (you can spray Malawash with a spray pack) and also under those circumstances you are getting bitten too if you are out on the grass???? Otherwise try Capstar in conjunction with your other flea treatment and when you do it ensure that you wash all bedding and soft furnishings (carpets etc) with Eucalyptus wool wash. Vacuum household areas after you dry out and also look at setting off fleabombs for inside the house - sleep somewhere else for a night or 2! Just some suggestions. It's really dry here as well but we don't have any fleas!
Rozzie
Do you know if the lime would have adverse effects on piglets? Yes get bitten when outside even tho there is not much grass in house yard.
t-time
Have you got piggies where your dogs are as well? I LOVE PIGS!!! :D Anyway, short answer is yes - lime has a burning effect on human skin, dogs paws and prolly lil' piglets too Malawash in a spray pack might be a better option because you and piggies and doggies are safe once it dries

Nic oh lah
Just found the little buggers on my German Sheperd after noticing she'd bitten a little raw patch of skin under her front shoulder -straight to the store and on with the Advantix and a Capstar right away - within 15mins she was itching like mad as they must've been abandoning ship. The worst thing is you feel so mean for not noticing a day earlier! Edited December 11, 2009 by NicGSDlover
Aziah
Oink, once you've treated the ground with lime or other, get some Fido's Fre-Itch concentrate and dip the dogs and allow to sun dry...this is very effective and they can be dipped once every 3-4 days for a week or two until you get everything back under control

Nannas
The hardest thing with doing yards is making sure there is nowhere for the little buggers to hide. Clearing any wood piles, compost heaps, leaves/grasses etc under trees and shrubs. All the dark moist little areas fleas like to hide and play about. Remember to spray under houses, kennels, sheds etc because as soon as the fleas know something is coming they will head for the hills until it is safe. Making sure you use something IN the house to stop them heading inside to avoid sprays etc. (as well as doing any pets at the same time) Depending on where you live, using something regularly (in house, yard and pets), until there are no signs of fleas for a few weeks can free you from them forever. (Of course farms etc are almost impossible) Certain plants (herbs), and natural oils are great deterents and really great if you clear them out or get them to a minimum. Helps prevent them coming back.
