Titre Tests

When getting titre tests done how important do you think it is to be tested for Hepatitis? This test has to be done in Scotland whereas Parvo and Distemper are done in Western Australia.

I've been quoted a cost of $252 plus consultation fee for all 3 tests which would put the total at over $300 which is really cost prohibitive.

Do you think it's necessary to have the Hepatitis test?

I was quoted exactly the same price. It is through Gribbles and as far as I was told the tests are a 'package' and cannot/will not be separated.

The thing is that hep and distemper dont come as seperate vaccines (only parvo does), so if your dog has low levels for say distemper but a good level of immunity for parvo will you re-vaccinate for all 3?

I only test for Parvo and Distemper. I guess it is a risk, but I am happy with it. I think most people would agree that Parvo is the 'biggie' here. I have spoken to a couple of vets, and they have said although they see Parvo all the time, each vet I have spoken to says they have only ever seen one or two cases of Distemper and none of Hep. Of course, the arguement is that Hep and Distemper aren't really around because people do vaccinate, but for me it's an acceptable risk just to do the WA test.

I pay around the $100 mark for testing.

I just had my 2yr. old titer tested and the vet suggested all he needed was the parvo test. This cost me $90, plus consultation. I'm happy with that. He came u[ with sufficient immunity not to be vaccinated this time around.

That seems like a lot. I pay $67 for the test, but get it done at the same time as a chiro check up so there is no consultation. (Vet does his own lab work.)

I recently called my vet and they said it was 3 separate tests, $90 each plus consultation. I am in Melbourne SE subhurbs and would appreciate any referral where it could be done more cheaply.

The other thing which is so annoying is they have to go in a kennel in December and the kennel will only accept C5 as mininum so there is really no point with that in mind. They are both nearly 5 years old so the only thing I can do at the moment is delay the Vac until a month or so before the kennel stay. Tempted to never go away on holiday again. :D

Wow, i think it cost me $120 or so to do all 3 and my girls levels were fine. Did my boy for just parvo but they must do the distemper with it anyway and his levels were low so revaccinated just in case.

My vet said distemper is not very common and hepatitis is even more rare to get. So i suppose it's up to you if you want to test for all three or not.

Can you shop around? will make it more cost effective....especially if you titer and then have to revaccinate anyway

I definitely want Shyla titre tested for Parvo and Distemper and hope to vaccinate 3yrly. I was just wondering though if people think I should get her vaccinated this year, and THEN get it 3yrly? She had her shots as a pup and so the shot this year will be her first shot since then.. should I get this one done and then do the titre test next year onwards, or do the titre test now?

Hi Shelle,

I really ummed and ahhed about this one too. In the end I decide to go with a C3 booster last month (when Kei was 17 months) and will either not vaccinate or titre test from now on depending on the situation. From what I have understood after speaking to some local vets and doing some online research, a dog has a much better chance at developing lifelong immunity from vaccination after they are 6 months old - though I may be completely wrong about that so please do not take it for gospel :) .

There are plenty of threads about it if you do a search too

Oh and from what I understand the vaccine which is labelled as a 3 yearly is different from the annual which is now recommended to be given 3 yearly if that makes sense. There was a thread on it in he health forum a few months back.
