Supercoat Puppy Formula

It is still several weeks away but I figured that I would get a start on some questions and queries that I have...

Have been around these forums for a while now so I know the whole "dry food" debate has been going on for a while as far as what brands are better than others etc. Just did a quick search and it seems that Supercoat is not held in a high regard at all - and that there are much better dry foods out there.

In approximately 7 weeks I am due to pick up a new labrador puppy. The breeder has stated that the litter is fed Supercoat Puppy Formula and that this should make up the most of their diet while they are growing.

With the previous labrador we had, he was originally on Advance, then switched to Hill's Science Diet (before I knew much about dog food!) then finally onto Royal Canin Labrador which Fraser did really well on.

Main concern I have is should I be switching the dry food that the puppy is on as soon as he is home? I know with the introduction of a new type of dry food that is should be done gradually over 1-2 weeks... I am just wondering whether there are better options out there than Supercoat.

I would leave the pup on the food for about a week after he comes home. You can buy small bags of Supercoat so don't have to buy 20kg If you decide in the meantime that something else suits you better and it's properly researched like you are doing, then change the pup after the first week - 10 days by mixing the new food with the Supercoat 1/8th or 1/4 at a time over a series of days.

I don't have an issue with supercoat but do have issues with the person that promotes it!

There is definatly better dry out there than supercoat, such as the ones you have mentioned, eagle pack, pro plan just to name a few. Although in saying that all mine were bought up on supercoat puppy and 3 of them now still have supercoat junior but it is only a small part of thier diet as they are fed mainly meat, veg raw meaty bones chicken wings etc. Also my oldest one is on Eagle pack as he is finicky with his food and sometimes only eats dry food for days on end and I feel supercoat is not enough on its own. Good luck with your pup, Im sure some more will pop in with good advice too!!

I am someone who believes that if a food works for you and your dog, stick to it. If the puppy is healthy and happy, you may as well stick to Supercoat. My own dog had a very sensitive tummy when she was little and we tried EVERY food known to man (and dog) but the only thing that didn't upset her was Supercoat. I have found it to be a good product for a lot of dogs and I subsequently used it on dozens of foster dogs and my own puppies.

Oh and congrats on your new baby!! I am so happy for you and I hope this new baby can help you recover from the loss of your gorgeous Fraser.

I would grab whatever he has been eating. I always give mine several weeks before starting the switch.

RC Labrador is great though, you can't really beat the breed specific formula.

I'd buy a small bag of whatever the puppy is on and then change over to Royal Canin, as you've used it before and are pleased with the results.
