huski
Jane was there last night ;) she's met and worked with Daisy and I so I can't imagine anything being funnier than that if we meet for training sessions I don't think it will involve any doggy play as I know some dogs aren't comfortable with others and I know myself I don't encourage Daisy to play with other dogs when we are training. But i'm sure it will be worthwhile for teaching them to focus and work around other dogs etc Edited April 22, 2010 by huski
MrsD
Oooh crud, it's expensive because of the postage, I got mine when we went to Crufts last year so didn't have to pay postage (but almost had to pay overweight baggage allowance ;) ). MrsD
GG if you were in the second row on the end you must have been sitting right behind Dagboy? Were you there when I came & put our bags down? I'm always up for a bit of training, especially someone different with different distractions. I'm another one who doesn't let their dogs play with other dogs, but am happy for the dogs to say hello etc.
GoldenGirl85
Umm, there was nobody directly in front of me, but I do remember the lady who demonstrated with the BC pup (blonde hair) was a few seats to my left, in the front row Hmm, I really want one of those click and treats...wonder if there will be anybody selling them at ekka? Mind if I ask why you guys dont let your dogs play? By socialise I meant hello anyway, Tess has always been wary around big dogs, she is getting much better seeing as there is only one other little dog in our agility group, but I want her to know that big dogs are ok everywhere Lexi needs to learn that just because there is other people and fur people around, doesnt mean you stop listening to mum lol Edited April 22, 2010 by GoldenGirl85
huski
I let my dogs play with others just not when we are at club or having a training session. Training is a time to work and play with me, not other dogs. Daisy is also one of those dogs who is very rarely interested in playing with other dogs. Occasionally I will let her have a quick (I.e a minute) play session with a friends BC but then I call her back to have a game with me and I expect instant compliance. MrsD
Ahhhhh sorry, the seat in front of you had my green bag on it, then Eddie (my OH who did the DVD), then me & then Lisa (the lady with the BC pup who did the demo). I have tried to write an explaination of why I don't let my dogs play with other dogs about 3 times now & it sounds stupid everytime! ;) Lets just say that I have been to too many obedience classes where I have seen dogs that are far more interested in playing with the other dogs than working with their owner because the owner takes them to class & lets them play with other dogs before & after class. Don't get me wrong, my dogs play with each other at home here, but when we go out it's not play with other dogs, but for my dogs to train & play with me. (does that make sense? probably not ) As it happens, Jarrah can be slightly dog aggressive with larger &/or more dominant dogs, Whisper pretty much just ignores other dogs anyway & Jonty is the only one who likes both people & other dogs, so I usually just let them say hello & have a sniff & then take them off for a game or something. ETA - I doubt you will get one of those at the Ekka, I've never seen them anywhere apart from Mary Ray, if you just want a tip-it stick you can tape a small container like a scoop that you get with your washing powder onto the end of a piece of dowling & use that. GoldenGirl85
Hmm, the more Im looking at these the more Im lost, I think I would be able to get her onto a target stick but I want something with an obvious target (a ball would be good) but the only one I seem to be able to find is a Karen Pryor one, which is just a fold down stick ETA, for my blonde moment, Ive just realised that I have a chuckit which will do the job nicely lmao MrsD congratulate the people who had their dogs there, they did a great job because they would have been under a lot of stress! although I have to admit I was looking at that Goldie hoping and praying to god that Lexi doesnt get like that ;) gotta love puppies huh? MrsD
If you specifically want a ball, why not cut a tennis ball in half, put it at the end of a piece of dowling & screw it on? ;) That way when she looks from below it looks just like a tennis ball, but of course on top there is the"cup" shape where you can put the treat & tip it out after you have clicked. MrsD
haha, yes, gotta love puppies, I had a GSD many years ago who was just like that, he wouldn't run off to sniff but it was all a big game for him to run around like a crazy thing until he decided that he should come back ;) . All of those people except the goldie lady are used to performing in front of large crowds (most were from DwD) but it is hard work when you are trying to do something that you don't normally do in front of all those people . I would have been like Karen with Zoya the crazy malinois "arhht, oops DOH, I wasn't supposed to correct!"

Lol, yeah when that dog came out it reminded me of Tess a few years ago, I think Ill use that method to teach Lexi to 'leave it' she is quite good with food refusal when it comes to dinner, but Im not sure how to go about teaching her to leave something alone...this could work

BC4ME
What a wonderful night of learning I was inspired and can't wait for the week-end to begin, roll on Friday lunchtime. It was lovely to see so many people there and Yes Richard is definately entertaining but I think his clip of Betty stole the show. GG where on the northside of Brisbane do you live?? The DWDQ are at the moment trying to establish some splinter groups of people to get together and train. At the moment there is 3-4 of us that train at Metro dog Club at Chermside. We pretty much do our own thing but if one of us are having trouble the others are there to help out if need be. Now off to try and get some sort of focus on my dogs before the week-end AND to decide which routine Chook will embarrass me with PS I was the one wearing the splarkly beagle necklace that Huski had her eyes on Edited April 22, 2010 by BC4ME

MrsD
That's one of the things I love most about him & it happens on his DVDs too, he makes mistakes & then shows you how to correct them! I've seen other trainers DVDs & everytime they do something on the DVD it's perfect because they have recorded that part 15 times & taken the best one from those & used it in the final version. Richard's show both him & the dogs making mistakes & he tells you what he's done wrong & how he's going to fix it . Did I mention I Richard (not that way ). GoldenGirl85
Omg I admired the stays he was doing with the 3 BCs and the waterdog? He must have such good control to get them to stay and come in turn, well, except Sybill lol, but I cant even get mine to stay in position, they keep swivilling to see where I am going
MrsD
Funny when he said he wasn't very good at stays, yeah we know why don't we? he can hardly stay still for 1 minute himself, don't worry about the dog .
