Leaked Urine After Big Run And Huge Drink Of Water

When I took the dogs out yesterday evening, my Kelpie X Tilly (who will be approximately 2 next March) ran and swam pretty much non-stop for 80 minutes (which is normal for her) and at the park she had a massive drink of water before we left. A few hours later she was asleep snuggled into my legs on the lounge when I noticed that she had done a wee on the couch while she was asleep. She had never done that before and did not look impressed when she woke up! She leaked more urine after this too so my dad took her on the lead for a walk outside, and back home later on she leaked a small amount again.

When she was younger on a couple of occasions after a particularly large amount of exercise she has done a wee inside before. But normally she is absolutely fine and is housetrained.

Is this anything to be worried about? She definitely drank more water than normal at the dog park!

Is she desexed FG and if so was she done young? This could be hormonal incontinence. A urinary tract infection is another possiblity. A quick trip to vet would tell you.

Yes Tilly is desexed and was done when she was about 8 months old.

I've had this happen on occasion with both males and females and it's usually after a particularly strenuous day where they go to sleep really tired. I put it down on those odd occasions to them just being really tired, and like little kids, they wet the bed when they were just too tired to wake up.

Is it possible that's what's happened to Tilly?

Yes it is definitely possible that is what happened Kirslin. Tilly was very tired when we got home too, normally when we get home after an average run she will get a bit silly running around excited before tiredness kicks in. But she didn't last long yesterday and just played with her soccer ball for about a minute then went straight to sleep.

This used to happen with our German Wirehaired Pointer bitch, also de-sexed, when she was younger and always when she had been going mad at the beach with lots of swimming. Didn't happen if she'd been on a big 'dry land' walk. We never followed it up at the vet and now at 9 she seems to have grown out of it, in fact I'd forgotten all about it until I read your post. I guess you need to be sure its not a urinary tract infection, but if it only happens on the odd occasion hopefully she grow out of it too

I noticed today that Tilly leaked twice. On Friday she went to the same park and ran & swam for about 65 minutes (I shortened her run slightly). Yesterday she just had a shorter run later in the evening at a different park, without any swimming.

Do you think I should take her to the vet to get checked out? Or just keep an eye on it?

I would get her checked for a UTI to make sure that is not an issue, but sounds like hormonally related urinary incontinence to me. SO a trip to the vets would be in order
