Maltese/shitzu

A purebreed dog has 2 pure breed parents of the SAME BREED ie. PB Maltese + PB Maltese = Purebreed Maltese

A cross breed dog has purebreed parents of DIFFERENT BREEDS ie. PB Maltese + PB Shih Tzu = Maltese x Shih Tzu

A mongrel has mixed breed parents ie. Maltese/Shih Tzu + Maltese/JRT (or any other breed, wheter distinguishable or not) = Mongrel

Hope that makes sense.

Nup, no sense at all. A mutt is a mutt is a mutt

It was always my understanding that any animal of two identifiable purebred parents was a "crossbred".

This is getting really funny. the dog is either a purebred or it's a mongrel. A crossbreed is a mongrel - mixed parentage.

Reminds me a of a notice I saw at the local shops about a year ago - someone selling Maltese/SHIATSU puppies :)

(not only are they cute & fluffy - they do massage, as well)

Gerturde would flip me the bird if I ask her for a massage :)

We get a lot of Maltese Shits in and people don't even realise what they've got. If the dog is snappy, they explain to me that that is the Terrier coming out in them ;) Those pesky Terriers...

Maltese are not terriers, they are lap dogs through and through, and are actually very nice little dogs. My oldest here is a maltese cross chihuahua and is and always has been a great and loving companion.

Here's a pic

;) Oops edited to add, Congrats to your mum op, I'm glad she found a nice little companion, no matter what the breed/cross ;)

are the maltcross shihtzu still popular

i remember bourke did a big expose on them and even vets said how good they were ...something about tempering the flaws of both breeds

i think as pups theyre cute but as adults they can be quite odd looking...

tear staining is something i dont like in any dog but this seems to be quite a big prob with these little crosses

i havent seen them in petshops the way i used to years ago

oodles seem to still lead in popularity

i like shihtzus...and the coat retains the beautiful markings..the crosses seem bleached out by the maltese gene

Well, hardly. You are more likely to get an unattractive Maltese than you are to get an unattractive cross or pure Shih Tzu.

The only problem is owners who don't look after them properly. Staining is easily fixed and will disappear by washing every few days with proper eyewash instead of all the rubbish that is advertised. I always have a bottle of Optrex (eyewash from the chemist) on hand and do all the dogs (white or not  ) every day or so.

Mongrel through and through, and are horrible usually when mixed together

I totally disagree with your comment! I have had pure breed dogs all my life except for the last dog, which was a Maltese/Shitzu. He passed away 2 weeks ago with cancer at age 15. He was the best, most loyal, obedient, and loving dog I have ever had. I would not hesitate to purchase another Maltese/Shitzu. Some would say there is not bad dog, just a bad owner. Dogs like people learn by example.

A cross breed is a dog that is bred by crossing 2 pure breeds together.

A mongrel is a dog who's parents are both either cross breeds themselves and/or of many different breeds.

A Maltese x Shih Tzu is a cross breed dog, not a mongrel....provided that either parent was a pure breed of each.

Really? I've never heard those definitions put like that before but it makes sense.

Since this thread started I've returned to work part time and I can tell you I haven't missed the front ends so bad it make s clipping them difficult, the protruding jaws, bad temperaments and clicking patellas

Technically they are F1 (first cross) crossbreds. :grimace:

Welcome to DOL, bradf1405. :grimace:

The problem with cross breeds is that you can in one puppy get traits from one breed, and other puppy will be more like the other parent, and there is no way to tell what you will get in your mix puppy.

So while your last dog was excellent, your next one might be totally different. It is such a big lottery as to what traits you may end up with when people cross breed.

If your last dog had excellent traits, it would be worth you researching both malt, and shih tzu, and seeing which breed has the traits that were most like what you loved about your last dog. And then buying that breed to ensure you get a dog that is how you want it to be.

The other danger with cross breeding is that there is no incentive for the breeder to use really good dogs for breeding, as cross breed fluffy puppies will sell very fast regardless of any physical problems they may develop when older, and it is hard to see problems under a fluffy coat.

Buying a purebreed from a good ethical breeder is really the only way you can buy a puppy and know what to expect in terms of conformation and behaviour.

Cross breeds such are a lucky dip. And unfortunately, many grow up to be so different from what their owners imagined when they first met their cute ball of fluff.

Unfortunately, there are bad dogs and good dogs and sometimes good owners can end up with a bad dogs if they buy one that is really badly bred. Good breeders are so important for the future of dogs. They are the ones that developed the traits and looks that we admire in our dogs. Cross breeders do not do anything to ensure that the dog they breed has the right genes to pass these traits on to future generations of dogs. They are in it for the money alone, and they put no thought into genetic health at all.

True. And as in the horse world, if you want a decent F1 Crossbred, you don't breed inferior animals. Breeding shite to shite gets you shite regardless of its breed or crossbreed.

I see "pure bred maltese shih tzu" puppies advertised all the time and wonder how people can be so stupid. How you get a pure bred out of 2 seperate breeds is beyond me. :grimace:

Usually shih tzu is spelt wrong and the add goes something along the lines of;

"Gorgeous TINY fluffy pure bred puppies for sale - Maltese shitzu. Parents on show"

Hmmm surely these "purebred" parents who are "on show" look different to each other if one is a Maltese and one is a Shih tzu? Unless of course both parents are malt/shih tzu crosses (usually the case) in which case parents AND puppies are simply mutts.

Oh and of course the parents are registered (by the council) and health checked (by the vet every year)

Personally I think the "nasty dog syndrome" shown by most of these crosses comes down to a combo of poor breeding + bad ownership (no leadership, rules, training or socialisation).

An unfair statement, such a comment is akin to saying that a child from mixed parentage is horrible, you cannot generalise.

umm nothing alike at all, dogs are not humans

cross those two breeds and conformation goes down the toilet, I agree the vast majority are horrible

I am not advocating cross breeding but realistically speaking....what is so dastardly wrong with a maltese x shih tzu's conformation? I have seen a large number of maltese x shih tzus in my life time and none came across as having a "horrible" conformation, in fact I would go so far as saying that they appeared to be very healthy and robust.
