redangel
Just a question...I have been watching the breeders thread for a while now and I note that some caesars are done flank. I have only had midline caesars done by my vet......I am always concerned that the incision line heals slowly due to pups feeding and the like. Can anyone explain this to me? I once requested an active bitch of mine get spayed flank and was told it was an 'unsafe' option....is it a vets personal preference that makes this call? ellz
I'm interested in the replies to this too. I've only ever had midlines done. And that is in two different States in Australia and courtesy of about 5 different vets over the years. Have to say though that I've never had a problem with the incision healing and I find it easier and less risky with puppy toenails as they get bigger and start climbing more. becks
The only bitch who had 2 c-sections owned by my parents had the flank incision, vet said it was standard practise at the time, allowed the wound the heal easier and was out of the way of the pups
ellz
Very interesting. I'll add to my comment that had the vet tried to do a flank incision on Koda yesterday, he would have probably encountered a world of trouble. Even flat on her back, spreadeagled like a great big hairy frog, he had a dreadful time pulling out the uterus which was all doubled back in underneath itself and snaked in and around her belly and probably helped to account for the inaccuracy of the head count xray. It was fascinating and horrifying all at the same time!
Sandra777
I've only seen one bitch (in real life) with a flank caesarian and that was getting on for 30 years ago. The wound took weeks to heal and months for the hair to grow back fully. Unfortunately had a few midline ones since and except on one memorable occasion when the vet managed to neglect to tie off the stitches correctly and the whole thing started to come unzipped I've never had a problem with healing. It's a matter of keeping an eye on the wound and acting if things don't look right. Agree, it's definitely more out of the way than a flank incision!
