Puppy With The Runs

Last night was the second night I had been up most the night with Jet having the runs. Before last night it was on Saturday night. I am now really curious what in his diet would be causing this as it has never happened before. He sleeps in his crate so all I hear is him whinging and scratching so I take him on lead outside to do his business and he tries several times. To start off with his poo's were brown half firm and half runny and then eventually they turned out green.

I feed him a chicken neck in the morning, yesterday I gave him a bone to chew on and he loves them. In the evenings I feed him Pro Plan puppy.

I am assuming it must be the meat. So today I am only giving him Pro Plan and see if he improves. Am I doing something wrong with his diet?

Jetty: sorry to hear he still isnt right. I dont like the sound of green runs. Have the chicken necks come from the same place? is it at all possible that they are a little off? I know that has happened in the past from a place where i used to get roo tails and roo mince, when i got it from a different place it was far more fresh and since then she hasnt reacted.

I would be giving him boiled rice and chicken tonight as it is bland and if he keeps that down then maybe try a little dry food, thats what i do

I just spoke to my vet and they recommended just keeping him on the dry food tonight since he is getting desexed tomorrow. So I am hoping he will not have the runs so he can be desexed. I am considering changing his diet.

I hope he's ok Jetty. Char has Advance adult chicken and once or twice a week i give her roo. It's too rich if she has it too often.

Puppies should not be left with the runs more than 24 hours & need to see a vet as they can dehydrate very quickly.

Chicken & boiled rice for 24 hours & if its not cleared. Vet.

Sick pups should not be desexed. So maybe change that desexing appointment into a consult instead.

I have been at work so I will be taking a look at him this afternoon. The vet advised me to not do the chicken and rice tonight and keep him on the dry food and see how he is in the morning. If he isn't better this afternoon I will ring them again. Its not constant runs but yeah I will keep a close eye on him thanks. Chicken and rice I might give him tomorrow night. But He will still go to the vet if he has the runs for a check up! Poor little fella.

I found chicken and pumpkin worked better for my boy (just cook together with some diluted salt reduced chicken stock and then mashed together - leaving some extra liquid as the extra fluids are helpful).

Is he still drinking? If not, then he is at higher risk of dehydration. Personally I would be delaying any surgery until he is 100%.

It might be he has eaten something that has disagreed with him - hopefully he is feeling better soon.

I have had 3 puppies to the vet this week with the runs. And after a few days the poo turned olive green. They ended up going off they're food and had a temp. Under my vets supervision I am injecting fluid under the skin every 3 to 4 hrs to keep them hydrated and injecting Antibiotics every 8 hours. I am also treating them with Baycox for piglets and small animals. they are looking better but still have a few days of treatment.

Green poop may indicate Coccidiosis (sp) so Baycox is a good idea.

He did not have the runs this morning or last night but I did realise this morning that his poo was green. He has had his surgery today though. When I asked the vet about the runs that he had she said that if it only lasted the night it would of been something he ate. I will mention to them when I pick him up that his poo was green. I didn't mention that this morning. Thanks Guys.
