Thanks ST. After I made the post I emailed Ruby's breeder about Applecross vet as she takes hers there and apparently one of the vets knows Labs well. You're very right about correct diagnosis being paramount, which is why I won't take her to the same vet Ptolomy had problems with (they were my vet too). I just don't think their staff are the most knowledgeable. Vet I saw last week can't do X-rays herself. Think an appt with applecross vet is required. Sick with worry!

Rubystar - Applecross is where I get the kids hips done. Let us know how you get on and I would think Ruby will need sedation and lots of it ;) to keep her still enough to take the x-rays. The kids usually walk out of the place not long after the x-rays have been done.

CC good Luck with your interview.

Ness - any news yet?

if you are willing to travel i would reccomend george at swan vet he is quite cheapish on some accounts but will look into it no owrries he is great with the dogs. i am actually considering using him for kelari's hip and elbow xryas as i am just strapped cash wise at the moment to go to applecross and i need to get it done sigh.

Lotto win where are you

Kenz update: Hmmm well the "news" is that they are still none the wiser. In true fashion she was not apparently lame for the entire day she spent there. A few things found on the xrays but nothing that should be clinically significant. They couldn't localise the pain because her responses were inconsistent.

So given the fact we are still none the wiser the treatment plan is 3 weeks strict crate rest and course of cartrophen and then progressive return to unrestricted activity.

Sounds like the merry-go-round is set to continue for a while.

RS phone around and get prices, i know Applecross has a good rep but I would always trust my vet as i know him and he has an orthopedic specialist there a few times a week. They only sedated mason for his allergy tests and he was still enough, i imagine they would just sedate Ruby. Best of luck and let us know how it goes but remember a week is nothing for an injury to heal so i would not suspect the worst just yet.

RS definitely if you can, get an appointment with Steve he is the lab specialist. if you are in a hurry though you'll find most of the vets there very competent in xrays as they do so many for breeders.

Oh ness that sux :( so awful when they can not seem to come up with a diagnosis :(

Mas xrays are different - they need to be completely still otherwise the bone placement is not always correct and its harder to dianose/measure. Only the calmest of dogs work with xrays with sedation only. In saying that, besides the cost, they really are no worse for it, and as Ptolomy says, they leave not long after. I think I dropped Ari off in the morning and they called me at 11am to come get her!!

If you can call it luck, a bit was on my side and Steve has a cancellation on Friday morning, so I snatched it up! Otherwise I would have had to wait 2 weeks. He came recommended to me from Ruby's breeder too so I am very glad I have gotten in with him.

I know Ruby will need sedation or a GA, but believe it or not when someone is poking and prodding her, it's like she knows it's for her own good and she actually stays still. If they have to straighten it I can imagine that will be mighty painful for her, so I will be happy for her to go under. My wallet, however, won't be, but my baby comes first.

When the elbow is xrayed RS it does need to be fully straightened and it will most likely be painful for her. Hope there is no fracture!

Ness, what a bummer - but yep dogs do do that quite often. Hopefully the crate rest works, all fingers and paws crossed!

Warning....Steve may be the best in his field but I think his bedside manner sucks!!!!! Just be prepared Rubystar - he is good with the dogs though - so I guess that is all that matters in this case.

I LOVE Steve! I can see where you are coming from Ptolomy - he's not a touchy-feely, hearts and flowers, gushy type of guy but he is seriously one of the most genuinely interested (and knowledgeable!)vets when it comes to his patients, he is straight-forward & to the point but is extremely caring and has a huge amount of heart. I've been using Applecross since 1994 and whilst all the guys there are terrific, Steve is the only one I'll see if I have something more than a run-of-the-mill matter. Buzzy LOVES his Uncle Steve - Steve will sit on the floor and Buzz jumps straight in his lap

We sent one of our boarding customers to him last week - 12 month old Rotti girl with intermittent lameness, getting progressively worse. Unfortunately the outcome for this little girl wasn't good - her elbows were destroyed with arthritis and so the tough decision was made :( Her owner rang to let us know a day or so ago, and to thank us for putting him onto Steve - he said he was the best vet he'd ever dealt with... even though the outcome wasn't favourable, Steve explained everything clearly, gave him some options and treated him with the utmost kindness, respect & compassion the whole way through.

I honestly can't sing his praises high enough :) He's always made himself accessible to me, I can ring just to ask his opinion or advice on something and I never get the impression he's too busy to talk to me, or not interested. I really enjoy talking to him, he is a wealth of knowledge.

Good luck RS, everything crossed for some answers for you & Ruby!

From what i understand and people can correct me if i am wrong but the difference with sedation is they are completely out and they just reverse it with another shot, its only for quick procedures, they used it on a quick mole removal for my old dog as it was safer than general.

Wouldn't worry about crying RS - I have um done that once or 10 times!

If I was closer I would hold your hand and cry with you!

Thanks OSS :)

I'm the type of person who gets so emotional that I can't even take in what is being said. I walk out going ummm so what did they tell me? I think I need to take a tape recorder with me so I can listen to it back!
