Dogsfevr
Thank you, I will take that on board, I need to be firmer with the training obviously . Collar is always removed for brushing and on other occasions like getting rinsed off on return from the beach. I will have a look at other slickers and see what is available. Much appreciate your answer. What we say is get your slicker brush & brush your arm,if it hurts & leaves marks then its to harsh. A slicker you should be able to brush your arm with without any over the top pain or damage. It really does come down to training, this will be a life long job so training & setting up the rules early makes brushing pleasurable & easy. The best way to brush is ideally on a table or raised area(non slip mat a must)dog stands & you firmly but fairly brush, the behaviour you allow is what trains the dog,if you allow dog to fidget, wiggle & be a pain it will be like that for the next 14 yrs. Brushing not only keeps knots out but its an important time to check for lumps, bumps, grass seeds, pricles & any other changes & a dog that stands still is a pleasure to brush . If you truly want to get shown some tips there is a dogshow in Geraldton on the 15 & 16 may & if you bring your gear down i am sure someone there would be happy to give you some tips,i am going . fetchindawgs
I think I might come as I am working the Sunday after but get this one off. I don't think I will bring Lincoln so that I can watch up closely how it all works.Fetchindawgs since most retreving training is done on your own I am looking fr a good book, I have been recommended Water Dog, Training Retrievers for Marshes and Meadows and British Training for American Retrievers what do you recommend? For the people who showed interest in going to a retrieving trial, there is a Novice & Restricted trial this Sunday (18th).It is in Upper Swan and directions are: Travel north on Great Northern highway & cross the Upper Swan bridge and then over the railway line. Turn right into Glen Road and then right again into Hallett Gardens. Continue along this road to the end where you will see a carpark where all the cars will be. Novice will begin about 7.45 to 8 am and restricted will be after 11 am. There is no catering, so BYO everything. Your dog is welcome if kept on a lead and you can keep it quiet. Hannah, that is a good book. Another is "Hey Pup, Fetch It Up" by Bill Tarrant. These books are written by Americans for American trials, so a few things are different to how Aussies do it. Keep this in mind when reading them. You could also go online and look at "Dobbs Dogs" where there are training hints. I have a DVD from a trainer in the USA which you are welcome to borrow. I'll try to remember to bring it on Sunday for you. It might help you with some of the basics with Lincoln. I'll look up what else is available for training hints and let you know. fetchindawgs
Can't say I have heard of British training for American retrievers, but check it out and see what may apply to your own training methods with your dog.

Ok, I will be the lost looking person with no dog. The most confuing thing about it all is thier is so many different methods. I am not keen at all on teaching Force Fetch myself but the impression I have gotten is that it is not used in Australia. My breeders dogs are sent away to a pro to learn force fetch when they are mentally ready when they were back in the states, but that is fairly common there I am told. English training for American Retrievers is the book of the Wildrose method, which I have heard mixed reviews on Edited April 15, 2010 by valleyCBR
Mas1981
Mason's mum - sorry to tell you but if he shouldn't have chicken been or lamb than liver treats would definitely be off the menu.Try sweet potato (raw) for training treats. Yeah I was also confused at to why she said he can have liver treats?? He wont eat sweet potato raw, I have tried him before so I am not really sure what I should use in class, at home he will work for his kibble but in class its another matter. Wazzat Xolo
I actually wouldn't recommend Studio Noah. Yes they take absolutely brilliant shots. But the cost of the photos is a rip off and they will not allow you to buy copyright so they cannot be used on websites How do I know? Coz my Mum got some done, bought over $1000 worth of photos (which was for a book of 10 photos and two enlargements- one of which was free with the $300 session fee) and they stuffed up the book that the photos came in and would not fix it and when asked if we could buy copyright they said no straight away Although I do recommend Studio Noah because their shots are fantastic but very expensive and we got them half price, when I was setting up my website I asked them if I could use two of the photo's that I had purchased on my site, despite 3 emails and 3 phone calls noone got back to me, I was quite happy for them to say no but I was hoping to get some sort of a response, plus I was going to purchase a gift voucher from them for a grand opening prize draw so they missed out! That's very disappointing about the book especially when it cost that much, they should have fixed it for goodwill if nothing else! Thanks for the reply, I know Jan and Brenda at Studio Noah and yes they do take great photos, I am after a photographer that will allow the use of these photos in publications etc, I have emailed some "well known" show photographers here in the West but obviously they have too much work to reply to emails. I shall keep trying, cant be that hard! lol maybe it could be as I always get Nacas backside more than his head!

Ptolomy
Any results from states yet? Eager Beaver - It would be too early yet The finals would be run after lunch and then they would have to wait for presentations. I know Caffy's red boy Alex made one of the masters finals and Bedazzled got a clear round in open but wasn't in the top 7.
