Scoota has a grade 2/3 heart murmur which was picked up last year when he was having liver issues. They were going to investigate it further with an ultrasound after he had his liver under control - but he is jumping out of his skin - so we are going to sit on it for the time being. He didn't have it when he was younger - his dad also developed one when he was older.

Sorry to hear about Daisy, hopefully it wont cause any problems.

Google would be my answer. Plenty of sites that explain the process. I would probably google MPL and TT.

Thanks Ness :)

NCarter did u ask for a quote for the surgery?? How much more is the surgery done by Rivergum?

Think its about 1000 more per knee but will have to ask again because that was for different surgery

Sorry to hear about Daisy's heart murmur :( The choc episode wouldn't have caused it would it?? Don't feel bad, you knew something was up went and saw about it :) Better late than never!

The vet seemed to think it was unlikely, but she was on beta blockers as she had a stupidly high heart rate during the choc episode. She's never shown any signs before that and used to run for miles with no problems back home. We'd mostly put her panting down to the heat, but she is also sleeping a lot at home :(

Also Happy Birthday Pippa :birthday:

Yeah thats alot more :( even $1000 overall would be a lot. Ask them for a total quote because it would only mean 1 anaesthetic and 1 lot of theatre fees etc.

Another one to add to the list, poor James somehow managed to hurt himself last night. He had got off the lounge to get a drink and then when he came back over he was stiff, his tail clamped under his bum and holding one of his back legs off the ground. I suspect he slipped over and really hurt his hip. Luckily deb has managed to squeeze me in tonight due to a cancellation so that is good... but my poor baby is very sore today. Lucky I have pain meds on hand so hopefully it will take the edge off the pain until we can get to the bottom of it tonight.

I forgot to add yesterday happy birthday Pippa!

CC sorry to hear about Daisy, but at least you know about it now :)

I think my next dog will be a cat , or maybe a goldfish - not many things go wrong with gold fish.. they are either alive or dead...

It is interesting that everyone slams mixed breeds, but this thread is full of purebred dogs with problems... guess it is luck of the draw.

Don't be so sure about the goldfish. Mum has goldfish and nothing but problems with a couple of them! She had to google how to humanely kill one because it was suffering badly, and had been for months. Too much work for so little return! That's kinda how I feel with most animals that aren't dogs. I like my animals that give back what I put into them!

Being that this is a purebred forum, the % of purebred dogs owned by its members are going to be greater, so of course we're going to read about purebreds with problems. I think it is luck of the draw regardless of what you get. And those childhood pets that never seemed to be sick, I think it is more just a case of we have more available to us these days treatment wise so we make use of them and are more aware and on the ball of potential problems. My parents would never have thought to take a dog to a doggy chiro or the like when I was a kid or even to look for signs of anything that could be wrong! It was more a case of they are either sick or they're not. These days, I am findig we are on the lookout for problems, even those subtle ones. You noticed Rosie's limp when noone else could. I can say that that isn't something my parents would have looked for or been concerned about as a kid!

I agree dogs just got by 'back in the day' and perhaps on this site there are more people who 'do' things with their dogs, as in dog sports. Being in the horse world I was already exposed to horse physios, chiros etc and people spend money on their horses. But again, I was in the performance side of things so the horses were treated more like athletes than pets.

My daughter had a good cry yesterday when I told her that Rosie would not be allowed to chase toys like she used to. She felt so sorry for her! I have such an empath on my hands.

My SIL has mixed breeds, small dogs, and has had to do two ops on luxating patella so i know it is not only purebred dogs. I was just pointing out that it doesn't seem to matter whether you go through reputable breeders etc. You can still end up with trouble! Look at poor MasonGibbs - 2 for 2.

I was chatting to a pensioner who told me this will be his last dog as he just cannot afford to have another one with problems. he has spent $6000 on his pet who he loves to death and takes with him on all his motor home journeys, as it has an immune defiency causing all sorts of problems.

I thought that was pretty sad.

fish are a pain, I know :-) .. i had tropical fish for years ugh. all that tank cleaning LOL

Makes you want to take any potential puppies to a specialist for a once over before purchase - once your heart is sold on them, you are stuck!

Luck of the draw really!

I have a perfectly sound fit healthy purebred dog - unfortunately his temperament is very lacking.

Luck of the draw and research into family history but even then you are still taking a stab in the dark and a leap of faith really.

We had a mongrel family dog, from a long long line of pure mongrels  She was originally a camp dog, we used to live in a remote town, anyway she lived to be 18 or so but she was not without issues, heart murmurs, seizures, but still had a remarkable life span considering her background and also that she was tick and worm ridden and very underweight when we got her.

hmm guess it is life too.. Rosie could have ended up in a home where she became a 'tick' foxie and never jumped off walls, retrieved balls or did weave poles and may have been fat but sound. hmm then her patellas would have popped though LOL

With my reading, it says weave pole training can cause the tear in the shoulder, so the wall may be blameless. Won't ever know! All those retrieving toys/balls.

Anyway, she is not sore today and as long as I am home she just snoozes. When i go out i think, judging by the paw prints in the laundry and across the pavers, she likes to do maddies. Will be making a trip to bunnings tomorrow and rigging up some sort of fence to limit her backyard access. ugh.

Lol not really a couple of mentions in the results section but they are all from longggg ago, start of the year.

There are quite a few agility trials but I feel no desire to enter them at the moment and I'm sure I will feel even less desire after the nationals lol

Yes, after you win at the nationals, not much point hey? :D

Seriously procrastinating today. Supposed to be putting together job application but feel crappy.. have come down with some hellish cold.
