(JK) So OH and kids took Rosie for a walk by the river in Applecross near heathcoate yesterday whilst i was somewhere else. I get this phone call from OH asking what he should do as Rosie was swimming after a duck and was 'miles out, only a dot in the distance and not stopping' . Apparantly she spotted a duck and her duckling and gave chase, the duck lured her away from the duckling by staying tantalisingly close to dog. She refused to recall at all and was almost in the boat channel markers in the river and there were power boats going back and forth. Anyway, OH had to strip off and go into the river to get dog whilst I talked to my daughter on the phone to ensure she and her brother were safe and not going to enter the water themselves. ugh. Apparantly he got to chest deep, the duck flew back to duckling, rosie turned around and was looking around as it was very choppy and she could not see the shore.. he yelled and waved, she spotted him and started making her way back. Needless to say, he was not impressed!! I have to admit, I don't think I would have entered the water after her.... SO in this situation what do you DO? wait for the dog to realise its mistake? drown? swim after it.. so i figure a duck and aversion therapy would work well !! I had similar problem at Shelley foreshore last week.. 2 ducks, .. she did however recall for me, eventually but had gone a fair way out by then. She then spent the afternoon having a wonderful time with the kids who were playing in a paddling pool and on the slip and slide and using water guns... she was limping badly by the evening though. Gibbs was limp free for over a week, I then let him play with a friends pup last night, he was perfect the entire time, today he is a little stupid when he first gets up, hoping it passes Sposed to say a little stiff!! Shame she is still coming up lame perhaps a bit of on lead only exercise for a little while may help both situations? Hope Gibbs is just having a temporary setback. The leaping and jumping around after slip n slides and the kids splashing probably not so much ;) Locked her in the laundry today whilst they had fun as she has ruined yet another hose, sigh,... oh and two foam water squirter things - but that is the kids fault for leaving them in reach... RS - i think i will put her on a long line and force her to recall next time! thing is the ducks sometimes are not there when you start and appear... she eyes off hte swans near my parents' house at pier 21 as well.. i would get a major fine and rosie would get a major surprise if she took on a swan!! Mason - so frustrating isn't it??? I don't know, how easy is it for a dog to drown? I think if she had of got disoriented in the middle of hte river it would be dire... if she couldn't see the shore and swam the wrong way.. it has happened with a race horse at the horse beach.. got away from trainer and swam OUT towards the sea.. they had to get a power boat to get to it and take it back to shore. Awful if Rosie drowned, but 10x worse if in front of ht kids! They were panicking and were really worried.. OH didn't know whether to leave them to save dog, or let dog sort it out LOL.. My dad wants to borrow her to find hte rabbits that are digging up their local oval, ummm, as much as she would LOVE that, I think the prey drive is high enough right now... I had similar issues with Kenz and was told "controlled" swimming and for not very long until she had built back up again. Controlled swimming means not racing after things, no waves, dead calm - ideally in a dog pool and for a duration no longer then a couple of minutes at a time. Sorry to hear she has come up lame again. I have given up looking at Kenz. Will pass no judgement until she has her treatment. Where i normally take her it is a calm part of the river, but i do get her to retrieve to swim. Like i said, the info I had was to not stop doing what i normally do. Which i thought was odd as i think it is the retrieving, on land, that brings her up lame very quickly. Not lame, lame.. but limpy. Fingers crossed you can get to the bottom of kenz's problem . I don't have that problem - one of mine is scared of ducks (we have big mean white ducks that are bigger than him ) and the other is just not really interested in them! I took my two over to my Bro's yesterday because I was helping him clean, my two needed no pressure to get in the pool I just said 'hop in' and they both did Surprised me a bit, they've turned into real water babies this year. Trixie still can't swim properly though Her high stepping front paws just don't work well for swimming, but she moves forward now which is a massive improvement I took a video of her spazzy swimming (she fell in but usually she leaps off the side with mega air action) I drove all the way to Eden Hill tonight to make the most of the practice ring that was going to be set up at the ADAA trial... but they hadn't set it up - Fail Oh well still got the dogs out and watched some agility and played with them Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She would let Ruby jump in and get the ball, then wait on the edge and just swipe it from her So you went to Eden Hill afterall? That sucks that they didn't have the ring set up!
